The unit holds CE certification and ECE R10/6 automotive approval, confirming its compliance with relevant safety and electromagnetic compatibility standards. Common Questions What is the primary purpose of an isolated DC-DC converter? An isolated DC-DC converter, like the Victron Orion-Tr, provides a stable and regulated output voltage while electrically separating the input and output circuits. This isolation prevents ground loop issues and electrical interference, which is crucial for protecting sensitive electronics and ensuring system integrity. Can this converter be used to charge a battery? Yes, the adjustable output voltage feature allows this unit to be used as a basic battery charger, for example, to charge a 12V starter or accessory battery in a 12V system. However, for advanced multi-stage charging, a dedicated battery charger or a Smart DC-DC charger might be more suitable. How does the remote on/off function work? The remote on/off terminal allows the converter to be switched on or off using a low-power switch, eliminating the need for a high-current switch in the main input wiring. This can be connected to an ignition switch in a vehicle or a simple toggle switch for convenient control. Is this unit suitable for outdoor installation? With an IP43 protection rating, the converter is protected against solid objects larger than 1mm and water spray. For outdoor use, it should be installed in a location where the screw terminals are oriented downwards to maintain its IP rating and minimise exposure to direct water ingress. Installation Notes Ensure correct input and output voltage polarity before connecting. Use appropriate cable sizing and fuse protection for the expected continuous current draw. Install in a well-ventilated area, ideally with screw terminals oriented downwards to maintain IP43 rating. The remote on/off function can be wired to a low-power switch or an ignition signal for convenient control. Refer to the manufacturer's manual for detailed wiring diagrams and specific installation instructions. Before You Buy Verify that your input voltage source is within the 8-17V DC range. Confirm that a 12V nominal output, with up to 9A continuous current, meets your application's power requirements. Consider the need for galvanic isolation in your system to prevent ground loops and protect sensitive equipment. If higher current is needed, remember that multiple Orion-Tr units can be paralleled. This model is a converter/power supply; for advanced battery charging profiles (e.g., 3-stage charging), consider Victron's dedicated battery chargers or Smart DC-DC chargers. All specifications are based on manufacturer data and verified information. Always consult the official product manual for complete details and installation guidelines. This product is covered by a 5-year limited warranty.
