Its non-isolated design means the input and output share a common negative connection, which is typical for many vehicle and common-grounded systems. This unit is designed to power 12V DC loads directly, such as lighting, navigation equipment, radios, or other accessories, from a 24V primary power source. The remote on/off feature allows for convenient system control, enabling the converter to be switched on or off with a low-power signal, such as an ignition switch. While this specific model is a dedicated converter, other models in the broader Victron Orion-Tr series (specifically the Smart Charger variants) offer adjustable output and battery charging capabilities. This 24/12-5A unit provides a fixed output voltage and is not intended for battery charging. Typical Applications Application Description Automotive & Commercial Vehicles Powering 12V accessories like radios, navigation systems, or lighting from a 24V vehicle electrical system. Marine Systems Running 12V marine electronics, pumps, or cabin lighting from a 24V onboard power supply. Off-Grid & Remote Power Converting 24V battery banks in small off-grid cabins or remote installations to power 12V devices. Industrial Equipment Providing stable 12V power for control systems or specific components within a larger 24V industrial setup. Built-In Protection Functions The Victron Orion-Tr 24/12-5A converter incorporates essential protection features to ensure safe and reliable operation. These include short-circuit protection to safeguard against wiring faults and over-temperature protection to prevent damage from excessive heat. The unit is designed for durability in demanding environments, further enhanced by its IP43 rating when correctly installed. Common Questions What does "Non-Isolated" mean for this converter? A non-isolated DC-DC converter shares a common negative (ground) connection between its input and output circuits. This design is typically used in systems where both the source and the load already share a common ground, such as in many vehicle electrical systems. Can this converter be used to charge a 12V battery from a 24V system? No, this specific Victron Orion-Tr 24/12-5A (60W) model is a dedicated DC-DC converter with a fixed 12.7V output. It is not designed to function as a battery charger. For battery charging applications, Victron offers specific Orion-Tr Smart Charger models. What is the purpose of the remote on/off feature? The remote on/off connector allows you to control the converter's operation using a low-power switch, such as an ignition switch or a dedicated control panel switch. This eliminates the need for a high-current switch in the main input wiring, simplifying system integration and enhancing convenience. Can multiple units be connected in parallel? Yes, Victron states that Orion-Tr models are short-circuit proof and can be paralleled to increase the total output current. An unlimited number of units can be connected in parallel to meet higher power demands. Installation Notes Always consult the official Victron Energy manual for detailed installation instructions and safety guidelines specific to the Orion-Tr series. Ensure adequate ventilation around the converter to prevent overheating, especially when operating at full load or in high ambient temperatures. Use appropriate cable sizing and fuse protection for both the input and output circuits, commensurate with the continuous current rating of the converter and connected loads. For optimal IP43 protection, install the unit with the screw terminals oriented downwards. Confirm that the input and output systems share a common ground, as this is a non-isolated converter. Before You Buy Verify your system's input voltage is within the 18-35V DC range required by this converter. Confirm that your 12V loads require a fixed 12.7V DC output and that the combined current draw does not exceed 5A continuous. Understand that this is a non-isolated converter, meaning the input and output share a common ground. Ensure this is suitable for your application. This unit is a DC-DC converter only and does not provide battery charging functionality or adjustable output voltage. Consider future expansion; while multiple units can be paralleled for increased current, ensure your system design accounts for this. All specifications are based on manufacturer data and are subject to change. Please verify compatibility and requirements for your specific application before purchase.
