Its non-isolated design means the input and output grounds are common, which is suitable for many standard vehicle and boat electrical systems. While primarily a converter for powering 24V loads, this model can also be used for charging a 24V battery from a 12V source. It's important to note that it provides a stable output voltage but does not feature the multi-stage charging algorithms found in dedicated battery chargers like the Victron Orion-Tr Smart series. The remote on/off function offers flexibility in system design, allowing the converter to be switched on or off via a low-power signal, such as an ignition switch or a simple toggle. This simplifies wiring and enhances operational convenience. Typical Applications Application Area Description Automotive & Commercial Vehicles Powering 24V accessories and equipment in 12V vehicles, such as trucks, buses, or vans. Marine Systems Providing stable 24V power for navigation, communication, or other marine electronics from a 12V boat battery. Off-Grid & Remote Power Converting 12V solar battery banks or other 12V sources to power 24V DC loads in cabins, sheds, or portable setups. Industrial & Specialised Equipment Supplying 24V power to specific industrial machinery or custom installations that operate on a 12V primary power source. Built-In Protection Functions The Victron Orion 12/24-20 DC-DC Converter incorporates several safety features to ensure reliable operation and protect connected equipment. These include protection against short circuits on the output, automatic shutdown for both input under-voltage and over-voltage conditions, and thermal protection that reduces output current if the unit's internal temperature becomes too high. The unit also features a temperature-controlled fan for efficient cooling. Common Questions What is the primary function of the Victron Orion 12/24-20? This converter steps up a 12V DC input voltage to a stable 24V DC output voltage, allowing you to power 24V equipment from a 12V battery system. Can this converter be used to charge a 24V battery? Yes, it can be used to charge a 24V battery from a 12V source. However, it provides a constant voltage output and does not feature the multi-stage charging profiles found in dedicated battery chargers. Is the Victron Orion 12/24-20 an isolated DC-DC converter? No, this specific model (ORI122420020) is a non-isolated converter, meaning the input and output grounds are common. What is the purpose of the remote on/off feature? The remote on/off connector allows the converter to be switched on or off remotely using a low-power switch, such as an ignition switch, simplifying system control and avoiding the need for a high-current switch in the main power line. Installation Notes Ensure correct input and output voltage compatibility before installation. Always disconnect battery power before making any electrical connections. Observe correct polarity for all connections to prevent damage to the unit and connected equipment. The Orion is not protected against polarity reversal. Mount the converter in a well-ventilated area to allow for proper heat dissipation. Use appropriate cable gauges for input and output wiring to handle the current load safely. Installation should ideally be performed by a qualified professional to ensure safety and optimal performance. Before You Buy Verify Voltage Requirements: Confirm your system requires a 12V DC input to 24V DC output conversion. Check Current Needs: Ensure the 20A continuous output is sufficient for your intended 24V loads. Non-Isolated Design: Be aware that this is a non-isolated converter, meaning input and output grounds are common. Application Suitability: Consider if this converter meets your specific application needs (e.g., powering loads vs. multi-stage battery charging). Space & Mounting: Review the dimensions (65 x 88 x 195 mm) to ensure adequate space for installation. All specifications are based on manufacturer data and are subject to change. Always refer to the official Victron Energy documentation for the most current information. This product typically comes with a 5-year manufacturer warranty.
