Victron Energy Cyrix Series Victron Cyrix 12/24-230A Intelligent Battery Combiner Automatic Dual Battery Management | 12V/24V Auto-Ranging | 230A Continuous The Victron Cyrix 12/24-230A Intelligent Battery Combiner is a microprocessor-controlled heavy-duty relay designed for automatic management of dual battery systems. It intelligently connects batteries in parallel when a charging source is detected, ensuring efficient charging of both your starter and auxiliary batteries. When the charging voltage drops, indicating discharge, the Cyrix automatically disconnects the batteries to prevent the starter battery from being drained. This advanced battery combiner offers a superior alternative to traditional diode isolators by virtually eliminating voltage loss, ensuring your batteries receive the full charging voltage from alternators or battery chargers. Its intelligent monitoring software prevents unwanted switching and adapts to voltage trends, providing reliable and efficient power management for various applications. KEY BENEFIT: Virtually no voltage loss, ensuring optimal charging efficiency for your battery bank. Key Features ▶ No Voltage Loss — Replaces diode isolators with a heavy-duty relay for full charging voltage delivery. ▶ Intelligent Battery Monitoring — Microprocessor-controlled software prevents unwanted switching by analysing voltage trends. ▶ 12/24V Auto-Ranging — Automatically detects and adapts to either 12V or 24V system voltages. ▶ Bidirectional Voltage Sensing — Engages if either the starter or auxiliary battery is receiving a charge. ▶ Starter Battery Prioritisation — Ensures the starter battery is charged first before combining with auxiliary batteries. ▶ Overheating Protection — Disengages in case of excessive contact temperature and re-engages once cooled. ▶ LED Status Indication — Provides clear visual feedback on the combiner's operational status. ▶ Start Assist Function — Allows manual parallel connection for 30 seconds via a push button for emergency starting. Technical Specifications Parameter Value System Voltage 12V / 24V Auto-Ranging Continuous Current 230A Cranking Rating (5s) 500A Connect Voltage (12V / 24V) 13.0-13.8V / 26.0-27.6V Disconnect Voltage (12V / 24V) 11.0-12.8V / 22.0-25.7V Current Consumption (Open) <4mA Main Terminal Size M8 (16mm bolts) Ingress Protection Rating IP54 Dimensions (H x W x D) 65 x 100 x 50 mm Operating & Power Guidance The Cyrix-ct 12/24-230A is designed for intelligent battery management, going beyond simple voltage thresholds. Its software monitors the general trend of battery voltage (increasing or decreasing) and only reverses a previous action if the trend has genuinely reversed over a certain period. This prevents nuisance disconnections during short, high-amperage loads. With bidirectional voltage sensing, the Cyrix can engage if either connected battery is being charged, whether by an alternator, solar panels, or a mains charger. It also features a dual power supply, allowing it to operate even if one battery's voltage is low, provided it's not below 2V for a 12V system or 4V for a 24V system, preventing unexpected operation during installation. The included 1-meter control cable with a Superseal connector facilitates easy connection for the 'Start Assist' function, enabling manual parallel connection of batteries for 30 seconds in emergency situations, such as starting an engine with a discharged starter battery. Typical Applications Application Area Description Marine Vessels Ideal for boats and yachts with dual battery banks (starter and house) to ensure reliable charging from the engine alternator. Recreational Vehicles (RVs) Manages the charging of leisure batteries from the vehicle's alternator, preventing discharge of the starter battery. 4x4 and Off-Grid Vehicles Ensures auxiliary batteries for accessories (fridges, lights) are charged while driving, maintaining starter battery health. Commercial & Emergency Vehicles Provides robust and reliable battery isolation and charging for critical vehicle systems. Built-In Protection Functions The Victron Cyrix 12/24-230A incorporates several protection mechanisms to ensure safe and reliable operation. These include: Overheating Protection, which disengages the relay if contact temperature becomes excessive and automatically re-engages once cooled • Overvoltage Protection, preventing connection if battery voltage exceeds safe limits (e.g., >16V for 12V systems) • Undervoltage Protection, ensuring the relay does not close if one battery connection is below 2V (12V) or 4V (24V) to prevent unexpected operation or damage. The unit also features an IP54 Ingress Protection rating, making it suitable for harsh environments. Common Questions What is a battery combiner and how does it work? A battery combiner, like the Victron Cyrix, is a heavy-duty relay that automatically connects two or more batteries in parallel when a charging source is present. This allows all connected batteries to be charged simultaneously. When the charging stops and voltage drops, it disconnects them to prevent discharge of the primary (e.g., starter) battery. How is the Cyrix different from a diode isolator? Unlike diode isolators, which typically cause a voltage drop of 0.6-0.7V, the Cyrix battery combiner operates with virtually no voltage loss. This ensures that the full output voltage from your alternator or charger reaches the batteries, leading to more efficient and complete charging. Can this Cyrix model be used with lithium batteries? The Cyrix-ct 12/24-230A is primarily designed for lead-acid battery systems. For lithium (LiFePO4) battery banks that require specific BMS control, Victron Energy offers dedicated Cyrix-Li-ct models. Always ensure compatibility with your battery chemistry and system requirements. What is the 'Start Assist' feature? The 'Start Assist' function allows you to manually connect your batteries in parallel for 30 seconds by pressing a momentary switch. This is particularly useful in emergency situations where your starter battery might be discharged, allowing you to use power from your auxiliary battery to start the engine. Installation Notes Professional installation by a qualified technician is highly recommended to ensure correct wiring and system integration. Always disconnect battery negative terminals before beginning installation to prevent electrical hazards. Install appropriate fusing in series with the Cyrix, sized according to the wire cross-section used, but not exceeding 230A. Mount the Cyrix-ct in a well-ventilated area, ideally closest to the smallest battery in the system (typically the starter battery). Ensure all cable connections are secure and properly insulated to prevent short circuits. Before You Buy Verify your system voltage (12V or 24V) and confirm the Cyrix 12/24-230A is suitable for your application. Check the continuous current requirements of your charging sources and loads to ensure they do not exceed the 230A rating. Confirm that your alternator is not a 'smart' or 'intelligent' type, as this Cyrix model is not suitable for such systems. Consult the manufacturer's wiring diagrams and manual for detailed installation instructions specific to your setup. Consider the physical dimensions (65 x 100 x 50 mm) and IP54 rating for your intended mounting location. Always refer to the official Victron Energy documentation for the most accurate and up-to-date specifications and installation guidelines. Product specifications are subject to change by the manufacturer.
