Victron Energy Victron Argodiode 80-2SC Battery Isolator 80A Rated | For 2 Battery Banks | Low Voltage Drop The Victron Argodiode 80-2SC is a robust battery isolator designed to enable simultaneous charging of two independent battery banks from a single alternator or charger. Utilising high-efficiency Schottky diodes, this isolator ensures that power flows efficiently to both battery banks while preventing discharge from one bank to the other. This is crucial for maintaining the charge of your starter battery, even when auxiliary batteries are being heavily used. Ideal for marine, automotive, and off-grid applications, the Argodiode 80-2SC minimises voltage drop, typically around 0.3V at low current and 0.45V at rated output, ensuring your batteries receive a more effective charge. It also features a compensation diode to help offset this minor voltage drop, allowing for optimal charging performance. IMPORTANT NOTE: Diode isolators require careful system design to ensure optimal battery charging and longevity. Consult Victron Energy documentation or a qualified installer for guidance. Technical Specifications Parameter Value Maximum Charge Current 80 A Maximum Alternator Current 80 A Number of Batteries 2 Nominal Battery Voltage 12V / 24V Voltage Drop (Low Current) ~0.3 V Voltage Drop (Rated Output) ~0.45 V Alternator Energize Input No Power Connections M6 Studs Compensation Diode Connection 6.3mm Faston Dimensions (H x W x D) 60 x 120 x 75 mm Weight 0.5 kg Operating Principles & System Notes The Victron Argodiode 80-2SC employs Schottky diodes, known for their low forward voltage drop, to efficiently direct current from your charging source to two separate battery banks. This design ensures that each battery bank receives charge independently, preventing any accessory loads on one battery from inadvertently draining another, such as your critical starter battery. A key feature is the built-in compensation diode. While all diode isolators introduce a small voltage drop, the compensation diode allows for a slight increase in the alternator's output voltage. This effectively counteracts the voltage drop across the isolator, helping to ensure that your batteries are charged to their full capacity and preventing premature aging due to undercharging. It is important to note that the Argodiode 80-2SC model does not include an alternator energize input. This means it is suitable for alternators that do not require a DC voltage on the B+ terminal to initiate charging. For alternators that do require an energize input, other Victron Argodiode models (e.g., 'AC' versions) or Argofet isolators may be more appropriate. Typical Applications Application Description Marine Vessels Ensures starter batteries remain isolated and charged while powering navigation, lighting, and other onboard electronics from a service battery. Recreational Vehicles (RVs) Separates the vehicle's starting battery from the leisure battery, allowing appliances to run without risking engine start-up. Off-Grid Systems Manages charging of multiple battery banks from a single solar charge controller or DC power source. Emergency & Commercial Vehicles Provides reliable power separation for critical starting batteries and auxiliary equipment batteries. Built-In Protection Functions The Victron Argodiode 80-2SC is engineered to provide reliable battery isolation, preventing unwanted discharge between battery banks. Its core function ensures that a discharged auxiliary battery cannot draw power from the starter battery, thereby safeguarding your ability to start your engine. The use of robust M6 stud connections contributes to a secure and stable electrical system. Common Questions What is a battery isolator? A battery isolator allows you to charge multiple battery banks from a single charging source (like an alternator) while keeping the battery banks electrically separate. This prevents one battery from discharging another. Why does this isolator use Schottky diodes? Schottky diodes are used because they offer a significantly lower voltage drop compared to standard diodes. This means less energy is lost as heat, leading to more efficient charging and better overall system performance. What is the purpose of the compensation diode? The compensation diode is designed to slightly increase the alternator's output voltage. This compensates for the inherent voltage drop across the isolator's main diodes, ensuring that batteries receive a sufficient charge voltage for optimal charging. Does the Argodiode 80-2SC require an alternator energize input? No, this specific 80-2SC model does not have an alternator energize input. It is intended for alternators that do not require a DC voltage on the B+ terminal to begin charging. Installation Notes Consult the official Victron Energy manual for detailed installation instructions and wiring diagrams. Always disconnect battery negative cables before making any alterations to the electrical system. Ensure appropriate cable lengths and cross-sections are used to minimise additional voltage drop. Mount the isolator on a non-flammable surface in a dry, well-ventilated area. Professional installation by a qualified technician is recommended to ensure correct system integration and optimal performance. Before You Buy Verify that the 80A current rating is sufficient for your alternator and battery charging requirements. Confirm that your system requires isolation for exactly two battery banks. Check if your alternator requires an energize input; this model (80-2SC) does not provide one. Measure your intended installation space to ensure the dimensions (H60 x W120 x D75mm) are suitable. Consider the overall system design and consult with a specialist if unsure about compatibility or installation. Always verify product specifications and compatibility with your existing system components before purchase. Manufacturer's 5-year limited warranty applies.
