Triumph NTC-950-2: the tire changer that arrives with the accessories already in the crate The unadvertised cost of a tire changer is the second order. You buy the machine, and then you find out the mount/demount head that came with it is the wrong material for the rims you actually work on, that the clamps will mark an alloy wheel, and that there is no soap tank. The NTC-950-2 is worth looking at partly because of what is in the crate: both a steel and a plastic mount/demount head, plastic wheel clamp covers, a soap tank with an application brush, and a tire tool bar. Two heads means a steel wheel and a painted alloy get the appropriate tool rather than the one you happen to own. The machine underneath is a fixed-tower wheel-clamp changer with dual assist arms, aimed at shops with volume and at the tyres that punish a bare machine — wide fitments, low-profile sidewalls and run-flats. It clamps from 16 to 28 inches on the inside and 14 to 26 inches on the outside, handles tyres up to 43 inches in overall diameter and 15 inches of rim width, and breaks a bead with 5,500 lbs of force on 110V power. Will It Fit? A tire changer needs more room than its footprint suggests, because the working area is the swing of the tower and the space a technician stands in, not the base. Assembled size. 56 x 93 x 80 inches — 1,422 by 2,362 by 2,032 mm — so check your ceiling as well as your floor if the machine is going under a mezzanine or a low beam. Crate size and weight. It ships at 38 x 65 x 51 inches (965 x 1,651 x 1,295 mm) and 900 lbs. Plan the route from the unloading point to the final position before the truck arrives; 900 lbs does not go up a step. Air supply. The bead blast system and the assist arms are pneumatic and the machine works to 120 PSI. A compressor that keeps up matters more here than on a manual changer, because bead blasting is a sudden, large draw rather than a steady one. Power. 110V with a 1-1/2 HP motor, so no three-phase supply is needed. Working room. Leave clearance all round for a 43-inch tyre to be rolled in and stood up. That is your measurement to take, in your building. Bead blast: what it actually does Bead blasting fires a sudden volume of air into the sidewall gap as the tyre sits on the rim, forcing the bead outward so it seats against the flange and the tyre begins to hold pressure. Without it, a stubborn low-profile or run-flat tyre becomes a wrestling match with ratchet straps and, in the worst cases, techniques nobody should be using in a professional shop. With it, seating a difficult bead is a pedal press rather than a fifteen-minute fight, which is the difference between a job that pays and a job that costs you the bay. Dual assist arms and why clamping range matters twice The assist arms hold the sidewall down and away from the bead-breaking edge while the head does its work. On a modern low-profile tyre the sidewall is short and stiff enough that it will not stay where you put it by hand, so the arms are not a luxury item — they are the reason the machine can do the tyres it claims. They also take the load off the operator, which shows up over a full day rather than on a single job. The two clamping ranges quoted for a wheel-clamp changer are not alternatives, they are two different grips. Clamping from the inside of the rim, the range is 16 to 28 inches, which is what you use on a large truck or SUV wheel. Clamping from the outside, it is 14 to 26 inches, which is what you use on a passenger car wheel where an inside grip would foul the drop centre. Between them they cover the fitments a general shop sees, and a machine with only one of the two ranges is a machine that occasionally cannot take the wheel in front of it. Perfect For High-volume tyre shops where the assist arms pay for themselves in operator fatigue alone. General repair shops that keep tyre work in-house instead of subletting it. Performance and wheel specialists handling low-profile and run-flat fitments on expensive alloys. Fleet workshops covering both passenger cars and light trucks on one machine. The material we hold on this machine does not include an independent North American lift-safety listing from a third-party testing body, and we are not going to imply one with vague language about being "tested" or "approved" — those words mean whatever the writer wants them to mean. Here is why it matters rather than why it sounds bad. Some commercial insurance policies, some fleet and municipal maintenance contracts, and some local building or fire code officials specifically require that shop lifting equipment carry an independent safety listing. Most home garages and a great many independent shops are under no such requirement at all. Only you know which side of that line you are on, so check it in writing with your insurer or your inspector before you buy — for this unit or for any other one you are comparing it against. Ask us what documentation ships in the crate and we will tell you exactly what is in there. Shipping and delivery This ships as freight, not as a parcel. It travels on an LTL truck to addresses in the lower 48 states, and the delivery charge you see at checkout is a live carrier quote worked out for your own ZIP code rather than a figure typed into this page, so nothing here goes stale on you. Two practical points decide whether the delivery day is uneventful. The first is unloading: somebody at the receiving end has to get the crate off the back of the truck. A forklift, a tractor with forks, or a telehandler will do it. If none of that is available to you, choose warehouse pickup instead and collect the crate on a trailer, because the freight terminal has the equipment to load you. The second is the address type. A delivery to a home is handled differently from a delivery to a commercial address and carries a residential fee, so tell us which one it is when you order rather than sorting it out on the doorstep. Inspect the shipment before you sign for it. Walk the crate, look for punctures, crushed corners and shifted banding, and write what you find on the bill of lading while the driver is still there. A clean signature is the carrier's evidence that everything arrived intact, and it is very hard to argue with afterwards. Photographs taken at the tailgate are worth far more than photographs taken in the garage an hour later. Warranty and claims Triumph publishes its warranty terms in its own documentation rather than in this listing, and we would rather send you the current document than paraphrase a term that may since have changed. Ask us for it before you order and we will give you the version that applies to this model and to the way you intend to use it, since commercial and residential use are not always covered identically. One rule matters more than the wording of the terms. If something fails, do not take it apart. Disassembling a component before the manufacturer has had the chance to inspect it is the most common reason a legitimate claim gets refused, because once it is in pieces nobody can establish what actually happened. Stop using the equipment, photograph the failure where it sits, and call us first.
