Triumph NTC-950-1: a tire changer you can add arms to later Buying tyre equipment is usually an all-or-nothing decision made at the worst moment — before you know how much tyre work you will actually get. The NTC-950-1 is built around a different answer. It is a stand-alone wheel-clamp changer that ships without helper arms and accepts one or two of them later, so the machine you buy on the strength of a hunch is the same machine you are still using when the volume shows up. That matters because helper arms are where a large slice of the price of a tire changer sits, and they are the part you need only when low-profile and run-flat work becomes routine rather than occasional. Deferring that spend without buying a machine you will outgrow is a genuinely useful option, and most listings in this category do not offer it. The core machine is not an entry-level compromise: it clamps from 16 to 28 inches inside and 14 to 26 inches outside, takes tyres up to 43 inches in overall diameter and 15 inches of rim width, breaks a bead with 5,500 lbs of force, and includes the bead blast system for seating stubborn beads. It runs on 110V with a 1-1/2 HP motor. Will It Fit? Measure the working area rather than the footprint, because what you need room for is a technician and a standing tyre, not a base plate. Floor and access. The machine ships at 820 lbs. Plan the route from where the truck can unload to where the machine is going to live, including doorways, steps and any turn a pallet truck cannot make. Working room. Leave clearance all round for a 43-inch tyre to be rolled in and stood against the machine, plus room to swing the tool bar. Air supply. The bead blast system works to 120 PSI and draws a large volume in a short burst. A compressor sized for air tools may need a bigger receiver to keep up; this is worth checking before the machine arrives rather than discovering on the first difficult tyre. Power. 110V, so no three-phase installation. Room to grow. If you expect to fit helper arms later, leave clearance on the tower side now. Retro-fitting into a corner is nobody's idea of a good afternoon. Bead blast, on the entry machine Bead blasting releases a sudden volume of air into the gap between tyre and rim so the bead is forced outward against the flange and the tyre starts to hold air. It is the feature that turns seating a stubborn low-profile or run-flat tyre from a fight into a pedal press, and it is normally the first thing cut from a cheaper machine. Having it on the model without helper arms is what makes this a starting point rather than a stopgap: the difficult part of the difficult job is already covered, and the arms you add later are about speed and operator fatigue. Two clamping ranges, two different grips A wheel-clamp changer holds the rim either from the inside or from the outside, and the two ranges quoted are not alternatives. Gripping from inside the rim gives 16 to 28 inches and is what you use on larger truck and SUV wheels. Gripping from outside gives 14 to 26 inches and is what you use on a passenger car wheel where an inside grip would foul the drop centre or mark the face. A machine offering only one of the two ranges is a machine that will occasionally refuse the wheel in front of it, and you find out which wheels those are after you have bought it. Rim width up to 15 inches and tyre diameter up to 43 inches put most passenger and light-truck fitments comfortably inside the envelope rather than at its limit, which is where you want to be operating a machine day to day. Perfect For New tyre operations where the volume is not proven yet and the capital has to work hard. General repair shops bringing tyre work back in-house instead of subletting it out. Small and rural workshops that need one capable machine rather than two specialised ones. Second-bay or overflow use in a busier shop that already runs a fully equipped changer. What's in the Box The machine ships as a stand-alone wheel-clamp changer with its tower, bead breaker and bead blast system. Helper arms are the documented upgrade path and are ordered separately. Because accessory packs and mounting kits vary, ask us to confirm exactly what is in the crate against your own order before you buy rather than working from a photograph. The material we hold on this machine does not include an independent North American lift-safety listing from a third-party testing body, and we are not going to imply one with vague language about being "tested" or "approved" — those words mean whatever the writer wants them to mean. Here is why it matters rather than why it sounds bad. Some commercial insurance policies, some fleet and municipal maintenance contracts, and some local building or fire code officials specifically require that shop lifting equipment carry an independent safety listing. Most home garages and a great many independent shops are under no such requirement at all. Only you know which side of that line you are on, so check it in writing with your insurer or your inspector before you buy — for this unit or for any other one you are comparing it against. Ask us what documentation ships in the crate and we will tell you exactly what is in there. Shipping and delivery This ships as freight, not as a parcel. It travels on an LTL truck to addresses in the lower 48 states, and the delivery charge you see at checkout is a live carrier quote worked out for your own ZIP code rather than a figure typed into this page, so nothing here goes stale on you. Two practical points decide whether the delivery day is uneventful. The first is unloading: somebody at the receiving end has to get the crate off the back of the truck. A forklift, a tractor with forks, or a telehandler will do it. If none of that is available to you, choose warehouse pickup instead and collect the crate on a trailer, because the freight terminal has the equipment to load you. The second is the address type. A delivery to a home is handled differently from a delivery to a commercial address and carries a residential fee, so tell us which one it is when you order rather than sorting it out on the doorstep. Inspect the shipment before you sign for it. Walk the crate, look for punctures, crushed corners and shifted banding, and write what you find on the bill of lading while the driver is still there. A clean signature is the carrier's evidence that everything arrived intact, and it is very hard to argue with afterwards. Photographs taken at the tailgate are worth far more than photographs taken in the garage an hour later. Warranty and claims Triumph publishes its warranty terms in its own documentation rather than in this listing, and we would rather send you the current document than paraphrase a term that may since have changed. Ask us for it before you order and we will give you the version that applies to this model and to the way you intend to use it, since commercial and residential use are not always covered identically. One rule matters more than the wording of the terms. If something fails, do not take it apart. Disassembling a component before the manufacturer has had the chance to inspect it is the most common reason a legitimate claim gets refused, because once it is in pieces nobody can establish what actually happened. Stop using the equipment, photograph the failure where it sits, and call us first.
