Topdon CAN-FD Cable Diagnostic Accessory This cable exists because of a change in how cars talk. CAN FD is a newer version of the CAN bus, and a scan tool wired for classic CAN does not simply run slower on a CAN FD vehicle — it fails to establish the conversation at all. The result at the bay door is a tool that has worked for years suddenly reporting no communication on a car that is otherwise fine. The CAN-FD Cable is the piece that closes that gap. Topdon states it is designed to support diagnosis of vehicle models using the CAN FD protocol, including 2018-2020 GM and Ford vehicles, and that it works with Vehicle Communication Interfaces that let tablet scanners communicate over CAN FD and diagnose the vehicle. Why a cable, and not a software update It is a fair question, and worth answering plainly. A protocol change of this kind is not only a matter of what the tool says — it is a matter of what the interface hardware between the tool and the vehicle port can carry. Where the interface needs a different path to the vehicle, a cable is the part that provides it, and no amount of software fixes a physical route that is not there. For a workshop the practical framing is simpler still. If a proportion of the cars arriving at your door are late-model GM and Ford and your tool reports no communication on them, this is the accessory that is missing, and it costs a fraction of the tool. Check this before you order Here is the honest limit of what the published data tells us, and it is important. The description says the cable works with "Vehicle Communication Interfaces (VCIs) that enable tablet scanners to communicate via the CAN FD communications protocol". It does not name which interfaces or which scanners. So this page will not tell you it fits your tool. What we can tell you is what is not stated anywhere in the data we hold: The specific scanners, tablets or interface units it is compatible with. The connector type at either end. The cable length. Any vehicle list beyond the model years and two makes quoted above. Whether a firmware or software version is required alongside it. Every one of those decides whether this accessory does anything at all for you. Send us the exact model of your scan tool and interface and we will check it against the current manufacturer documentation before you buy. A diagnostic cable that does not fit is not a partial success; it is a return, and a car still on the ramp. Perfect For Independent workshops seeing late-model GM and Ford vehicles that their existing setup will not talk to. Mobile diagnostic technicians, where "I cannot connect" at the customer's kerbside is a wasted call-out. Used car dealers and trade buyers who need a pre-purchase scan on newer stock. Shops extending the working life of an existing tablet scanner rather than replacing it over one protocol. What's in the Box One CAN-FD diagnostic cable. Nothing else is stated in the listing data and nothing else is implied — there is no interface, no scanner and no software licence included here. This is an accessory for equipment you already own. Certification and compliance No third-party safety or conformity listing is published for this item in the data we hold, and nothing on this page should be read as claiming one. For a passive diagnostic lead that is the ordinary situation rather than a gap — approvals of that kind sit with the instrument and the interface, not with the cable between them. If a fleet, dealer or municipal policy requires named documentation for your diagnostic equipment, that requirement attaches to the tool; ask us and we will help you obtain the current manufacturer paperwork for it. Shipping and delivery A small parcel item, shipping to addresses in the lower 48 states, or available for collection from the warehouse. The cost is calculated for your address at checkout rather than quoted here, because carrier pricing moves. Check the connectors at both ends the moment it arrives — a bent pin is visible on day one and hard to argue about later — and note any damage on the delivery paperwork at the time. Warranty Terms and the claim process are on our warranty claims page. If the cable is faulty or turns out to be the wrong part, keep it as it arrived and contact us before cutting, re-pinning or adapting it. A modified lead cannot be assessed by anyone, and on a diagnostic cable the modification and the fault are impossible to tell apart once the work has been done.
