Topdon BNC to 4mm Adapter: The Piece That Makes The Rest Of The Scope Kit Work Together A scope input is a BNC socket. Almost everything a technician actually wants to clip onto a vehicle — breakout leads, probes, an attenuator — terminates in 4mm connectors. This test lead is the piece that bridges the two: a male BNC at the instrument end, splitting to a pair of 4mm connectors at the working end, intended to help the Phoenix Scope read a range of signal types. It is the least glamorous item in a scope kit and the one whose absence stops the kit being a kit. Without it you own an instrument and a box of leads that cannot reach each other. The colour-coding is the feature, not the packaging The two 4mm connectors are colour-coded: black is the earth wire and red is the positive pole. That is a small manufacturing decision with an outsized effect on a working day, because polarity on a scope is not like polarity on a multimeter. Get it backwards on a meter and you read a negative number, notice immediately, and swap the leads. Get it backwards on a scope and you get a waveform — an inverted one. It has the right amplitude, the right timing and the wrong shape, and it will happily lead a technician to conclude something confident and incorrect about a coil, an injector or a sensor. An adapter that makes the earth connection unmistakable at a glance removes an entire class of quiet errors, particularly for anyone who is not on a scope every day. The manufacturer's guidance is specific about pairing: the red positive connector is the one to run to the 6-way Breakout Leads. Following that convention consistently is what makes a trace reproducible from one session to the next, and reproducibility is most of what makes a scope trustworthy. It works with the attenuator too These leads can also be used with the 20:1 attenuator, which matters if you are assembling a diagnostic kit rather than buying a single item. The attenuator is what allows fuel injector and primary ignition waveform capture; this adapter is part of how it gets connected. Buying them at the same time avoids the familiar situation of owning both halves of a capability and being unable to join them until the next order arrives. What it is, and what it is not Be clear about the category. This is a passive test lead. It does not condition, scale, filter or protect a signal, and it does not extend what your scope is capable of measuring — it changes the shape of the connection and nothing more. If the measurement you are planning needs the signal reduced before it reaches the instrument, the adapter is not the part that does that job. It is also specified here in the context of the Phoenix Scope. If you intend to use it with a different instrument, the connector standard makes that physically plausible and we are not going to claim compatibility we cannot source. Ask us with the instrument named and we will check before you order. Perfect For Workshops running a Phoenix Scope that need to connect breakout leads or an attenuator to the instrument. Technicians building a scope kit incrementally, where this is the connecting piece rather than an optional extra. Mobile diagnosticians who want a spare in the van, because a damaged lead ends the diagnostic part of a call-out entirely. Training environments, where colour-coded polarity saves a great deal of explaining and a great deal of misreading. Anyone who has already inverted a waveform once and would rather it did not become a habit. What's in the Box The test lead: one male BNC connector splitting to two 4mm connectors, colour-coded black for earth and red for positive. Nothing else is stated in the information we hold and nothing else is implied — there is no scope, no breakout lead set and no attenuator included here. If you need a case, a longer lead or printed documentation, ask before ordering and we will confirm what the manufacturer supplies. A rating is the kind of number a technician relies on when deciding whether a measurement is safe to make, so an approximate one is worse than an honest blank. Your instrument's documentation states what it expects at its input, and that is the document to work from. Tell us what you are trying to measure and we will check this lead against the manufacturer's documentation before you buy. Certification and compliance No third-party safety listing or conformity scheme is published for this item in the information we hold, and this page claims none. It is stated rather than left blank because a badge inferred from silence is the hardest to correct later, and because measurement accessories used around energised circuits are exactly the category where an employer, an insurer or a training provider may ask for documented ratings. If yours does, ask us and we will obtain the current manufacturer documentation before you commit. Delivery and pickup This ships as a small parcel item within the lower 48 states, or you are welcome to collect it from the warehouse. This item ships free, so there is nothing to add at checkout. Open the package on arrival and check the connectors before you sign — a bent BNC shell or a crushed connector is easy to see at the door and hard to claim for once the paperwork says the goods arrived in good order. Warranty Terms and the claim process are published on our warranty claims page. No term is printed here because none is stated in the information we hold; ask before ordering and we will confirm the current manufacturer position. If the lead fails, keep it as it is and contact us before cutting, splicing or re-terminating it. A repaired lead cannot be assessed, and on a test lead it also cannot be trusted afterwards — an intermittent joint inside a repair is indistinguishable, on screen, from an intermittent fault in the vehicle.
