Their main objective was qualifying for the 2018 FIFA World Cup and 2019 AFC Asian Cup, with matches in the second round of Asian qualifying providing stern tests against stronger opposition. Singapore competed in Group E alongside Japan, Syria, Afghanistan and Cambodia, seeking to build consistency and develop younger players alongside experienced internationals. A major highlight came in June, when Singapore stunned Japan with a memorable 0–0 draw in Saitama after defeating Cambodia 4–0. The Lions later secured victories over Afghanistan and Cambodia at home, strengthening their qualifying hopes. However, consecutive defeats to Japan and Syria in November exposed the challenge of maintaining momentum against stronger opponents. At the Southeast Asian Games, Singapore’s under-23 side reached neither the knockout stage nor the medal positions, reflecting a mixed year for Singapore football. Note: These jerseys are authentic.
