Robinair 34288NI: a single-pass R-134a station built around a filter you can change yourself The 34288NI is a professional recovery, recycling and recharge station for R-134a automotive air conditioning systems. The detail worth leading with is the one buyers usually discover after purchase rather than before: the recycling stage runs through a replaceable spin-on filter, the Robinair 34724, and that filter is rated to process 150 lb (68 kg) of refrigerant before it is due for replacement. A spin-on filter is a five-minute job with no special tools. That single design decision is what keeps this station in service in a busy shop instead of waiting on a technician visit. Everything else follows the professional pattern: automated recovery, automated oil drainage, a programmable vacuum cycle, and manual control of the recharge when you want it. What single-pass recycling actually means Refrigerant coming out of a vehicle is not clean. It carries moisture, acid and debris from whatever failed. A recycling stage filters that contamination out so the refrigerant can go back into a vehicle rather than into a disposal cylinder. This machine filters the charge once, on its way into storage, to the standard the industry sets for reusable refrigerant. The practical consequence is the one that shows up on your parts bill. Refrigerant you recover and reuse is refrigerant you do not buy, and on a shop doing steady A/C volume the difference between recovering into a recycled supply and recovering into a disposal cylinder is not a small line item. The filter is the consumable that makes that trade work, which is why its capacity is worth checking against your own throughput before you decide this is the right size of machine for you. The vacuum stage, and why the timer is adjustable Evacuation is where A/C work is won or lost, because moisture left in a system turns into acid and takes the compressor out months later. This station uses a 1.5 CFM vacuum pump with a programmable evacuation time: it defaults to 10 minutes and can be set as long as 99 minutes. That range exists because the right answer genuinely varies. A small system that was opened briefly on a dry day is not the same job as a large system that sat open overnight in humid weather, and a fixed timer forces you to treat them identically. Being able to set a long evacuation and walk away is the difference between doing the job properly and doing the job that fits the timer. Automatic where it should be, manual where it matters Recovery and oil drain are automated. The station performs a deep recovery and then drains the recovered oil automatically, so the oil can be measured and the same amount put back — the step that gets estimated by eye on machines that make you do it by hand, and the step that quietly starves compressors. The recharge, by contrast, is under your control. You choose the high side, the low side, or both, according to what the vehicle needs and how it is behaving. And when you do want the whole job hands-off, the automatic function mode runs recovery, vacuum and recharge from a single command. It is a sensible split: the parts where judgement adds nothing are automated, and the part where judgement matters is left to the technician. The controls and the plumbing Navigation and data entry run through a 4.3-inch graphical colour display and a keypad, so parameters are read off a screen rather than decoded from a two-digit LED. Integrated high-side and low-side manifold gauges are fitted, giving you the real-time reading you would otherwise be watching on a separate set. The service hoses are 9 ft (2.75 m) and meet the SAE J2196 standard for refrigerant hose. Recovered refrigerant goes into a refillable internal storage vessel with a 22 lb (10 kg) capacity. Will It Fit? This is a floor-standing station on wheels, and it needs bay space plus room to work around it rather than a shelf. Our catalogue lists the width as 24 in and the height as 42 in. Check the depth before you plan the space. Published figures for the depth differ: one specification field gives 42 in, another gives 29 in. Those describe noticeably different footprints. If the depth decides whether this fits your bay, confirm the figure with us before you order — we will get it from Robinair's specification sheet. Confirming clearances, doorway widths and the route from the loading point into the shop is the customer's responsibility, and it is much easier to do before delivery than after. Perfect For Independent shops running steady R-134a volume. Recycling plus a serviceable filter is the combination that pays for itself on throughput. Technicians who diagnose as well as service. Independent function control and a long adjustable evacuation are diagnostic tools, not conveniences. Shops standardising on one machine. Automatic mode for routine work, manual charge paths for the awkward jobs, from the same station. Anyone replacing a hand-valve manifold setup. The automated oil drain alone removes a recurring source of error. What Is in the Box Our record describes the station complete with its integrated manifold gauges, its 9 ft SAE-compliant service hoses, the refillable internal storage vessel and the spin-on filter system. It does not itemise a full packing list, and it does not state whether a starting refrigerant charge is supplied — assume it is not, and ask us if that matters. Replacement filters are the Robinair 34724; order a spare with the machine rather than after you need one. Beyond that, our product data claims no third-party certification or equipment listing for the machine as a whole. That is an absence in what we hold rather than a finding about the equipment. Some insurers, fleet contracts and state refrigerant-handling programmes require recovery equipment carrying a specific listing, so if that applies to your shop, ask us to confirm it in writing before you order instead of reading anything into the silence here. Shipping and delivery This item ships free within the lower 48 states, so there is nothing to add at checkout. Plan for how you will get the crate off the truck: either you have the equipment and the people, or you arrange collection from the carrier terminal, which is often the easier option for a single unit. Residential delivery is available and carries a residential fee, shown at checkout before you pay. Inspect the crate before the driver leaves and write any damage on the delivery paperwork; a clean signature closes off the easy route to a claim. Warranty and service Our record links to the Robinair warranty claims process rather than stating a term, so we will not print one here — ask us and we will confirm the current terms for this model before you buy. Whatever the term turns out to be, one rule applies throughout it: if the station faults, contact us first. Do not open the cabinet, do not disassemble the pump or the filter head, and do not attempt an internal repair. Equipment that has been opened is routinely refused for warranty, and the fault you are trying to save time on is usually the cheap part of the eventual bill.
