Ranger RTJ-1 1-Ton Capacity Telescoping Transmission Jack Ranger RTJ-1 1-Ton Telescoping Transmission Jack The RTJ-1 stands on a 39" x 39" base — a notably wide stance for a 1-ton jack, and wider than the heavier two-ton-class unit in the same family. That is not a rounding difference in a spec sheet. A telescoping jack puts its load at the top of a tall column, and the further the column extends the more a small floor irregularity turns into a real tipping moment. Broadening the base is how a manufacturer buys stability back at full extension, and it is the reason this jack feels planted at heights where narrower ones become nervous. The trade is footprint. Those 39 inches have to fit between the arms or runways of your lift with room to steer, so the stability comes out of your floor space budget. Whether that is the right trade is a question about your bay, and it is worth asking before you order rather than after the pallet arrives. The Capacity Number That Actually Applies This is a two-stage jack and it carries two ratings. The first stage is rated 2,000 lbs — the full 1 ton on the badge. The second stage, the inner section that takes the saddle up to full extension, is rated 1,000 lbs. Read that carefully, because it inverts the way most people shop. The higher you need to reach, the less the jack is rated to carry. A unit being lifted onto a bench near the bottom of the stroke has the whole 2,000 lbs behind it; the same unit being supported near full extension under a vehicle high on a lift is in the 1,000 lb stage. Match your heaviest assembly to the stage you will actually be working in. Will It Fit? Lowered height is 37" and the base is 39" x 39". Both are demanding numbers in a small bay. The 37" figure is the one that catches people out: the saddle has to pass under the transmission with the vehicle at working height, so a car on stands or a low-rise lift will very often not give this jack enough room. It is designed for a vehicle on a full-rise two-post or four-post lift. At the other end, published figures for the raised height differ: the specification table on this page gives 73", while the manufacturer's product copy describes the column as reaching 71". If the last two inches of reach decide the purchase for you, confirm the figure with us before you order — we will check it against Ranger's current specification sheet. For any ordinary use, either number means the jack reaches comfortably under a lift raised to standing height. Shipping weight is 188 lbs, so it arrives on a pallet and needs two people or a pallet jack to place. Customer responsibility: a transmission jack raises and positions a load, it never supports one. Chain the unit to the saddle, and support the vehicle itself properly and independently before anyone goes underneath. How the Telescoping Column Works for You The column extends vertically through a long range rather than swinging on an arm, which does two things. It keeps the load directly over the base — no reach-out, no cantilever — and it lets the saddle drop into recessed transmission housings and deep tunnels that a fixed-height jack cannot enter. Through that range the hydraulic geometry allows genuinely incremental movement, so the operator can raise a case a fraction at a time while lining up the input shaft, instead of the all-or-nothing jump that makes alignment work miserable. Lowering is where a transmission jack earns its keep. The release valve gives a controlled descent, letting a heavy case be walked down onto the bench or into position rather than dropped the last inch. Hydraulics and the Foot Pump The RTJ-1 uses double-sealed hydraulic cylinders. The second seal is not redundancy for its own sake — it is what keeps shop grime, brake dust and oil mist out of the fluid on a tool that spends its life directly beneath the drips. Contaminated fluid, not fair wear, is what turns a jack into one that sinks slowly under load. The pump is foot-operated. On paper that is a convenience item; in practice it is the reason the job is possible at all, because both of your hands are needed on the transmission while it is being lifted. Every pump stroke translates to lift while you steady, rotate and align the case. The Adjustable Saddle The saddle secures the transmission or transaxle during the operation and can be repositioned to suit different housing shapes and bolt patterns across domestic, import and performance vehicles. Anchoring chains supplied with the jack fix the load to the saddle so it cannot shift or tilt while the jack is moved. The saddle assembly is built to resist slipping or deforming under the twisting loads that appear during alignment, which is when a transmission is at its most awkward and least forgiving. Perfect For Independent repair shops doing occasional to regular drivetrain work on cars and light trucks. Transmission and clutch specialists who want a lighter jack alongside a heavier one for smaller units. Fleet and mobile technicians, where the wide base is an advantage on uneven ground. Home and enthusiast garages with a full-rise lift, adequate ceiling height and a bay wide enough for a 39" square footprint. What's in the Box The jack ships as a complete assembly with its telescoping column, foot-operated pump, adjustable saddle and the anchoring chains that secure the load. This listing does not itemise adapters or optional accessories, so treat anything beyond that as something to confirm with us before ordering. Specifications Lifting capacity, first stage 2,000 lbs. Certification, Stated Honestly No third-party product-listing claim is made for this jack on this listing, and we will not invent one. Lifting equipment in a commercial workplace is usually governed by the employer's own inspection and load-test regime, and some insurers and fleet contracts require equipment assessed by an independent laboratory rather than declared compliant by the manufacturer. If your policy contains that language, confirm the requirement before purchase rather than at an inspection. Shipping and Delivery Ships by freight to the lower 48 states. Freight delivery is to the kerb or a dock, not inside the building, so plan to unload the pallet yourself or to collect it from the carrier's terminal. A residential address carries a residential fee, quoted live at checkout alongside the freight. Check the pallet over before signing and record any damage on the bill of lading at the moment of delivery; once a clean bill is signed, a damage claim becomes extremely difficult. Warranty Ranger publishes a warranty statement covering its products and it governs this jack. This listing states no term, so no term is quoted here — ask and we will send the current statement before you buy. If a fault appears, contact us first and leave the jack assembled. Opening a sealed hydraulic cylinder before the claim is assessed is the most common way a good claim gets refused. Contact us for more information.
