Ranger Rotor Silencer Bands for the RL-8500 and RL-8500XLT Most shops buy a silencer band because the lathe is loud. The better reason to buy one is that the noise and the finish problem are the same problem. A brake rotor is a pair of thin cast iron discs joined at the hat — geometrically, a bell. Put a cutting bit against it and it rings. What you hear as a scream across the shop, the bit feels as the rotor moving away from and back into the cut hundreds of times a second, and what the customer eventually feels is a surface that was never as flat as the dial indicator suggested. A silencer band is the damper that stops the ringing. Wrapped around the rotor's outer edge, it converts that vibration into heat instead of sound and instead of chatter marks. Ranger's bands are the ones matched to the RL-8500 and RL-8500XLT bench lathes, which is the specific reason to buy this part rather than a generic strap. Will It Fit Your Lathe? This silencer is listed as fitting the Ranger RL-8500 and the RL-8500XLT. Those two machines are close relatives, and shops that own one frequently talk about it by the shorter name, so check the model plate on your machine rather than going by memory or by what is written on the shop whiteboard. The XLT designation matters. A silencer only works if it tensions correctly against the rotor; one that does not fit the machine it is mounted on rides along with the rotor and damps nothing. So treat fitment as the whole decision here. If your machine is anything other than an RL-8500 or an RL-8500XLT, or if you are unsure which variant you have, send us the model and serial from the plate and we will confirm the right part before you order. That two-minute check is cheaper than a return. What the Band Actually Does for You Three things the manufacturer claims for this part, and why each one is worth money rather than being a nicety: It reduces noise. Rotor turning is one of the loudest recurring jobs on a service floor, and it happens in the middle of a working bay rather than in an isolated room. Cutting that noise is not just comfort — it is the difference between a technician being able to hear a customer, a phone, or the machine itself starting to complain. It reduces friction and eases the cut. A damped rotor loads the cutting bits more evenly. Even loading is what produces a consistent non-directional finish, and it is also what stops the bits from chipping prematurely against a workpiece that is bouncing into them. It extends the working life of the lathe and the parts around it. Vibration does not stay in the rotor. It travels back through the arbor, the adapters and the spindle bearings, and those are the components whose wear turns into runout you then have to chase with a lathe that used to be accurate. Damping at the source is the simplest and least costly place in that chain to intervene. Long-Lasting, and a Consumable Either Way The band is built to last, but treat it as a consumable that lasts a long time rather than as a permanent fixture. It is a friction component doing a friction job: every cut it damps costs it a little material. Keeping a spare in the drawer means a worn band never becomes the reason a brake job gets pushed to tomorrow, and it is the single most common thing shops wish they had ordered alongside the first one. Perfect For Independent service shops running an RL-8500 or RL-8500XLT as a daily-driver machine. Tire and brake specialists turning rotors in volume, where finish consistency is what keeps comebacks down. Dealership service departments where bay noise is a customer-facing problem as well as a technical one. Fleet and municipal shops replacing a band that has finally worn out on a machine that is otherwise still good. What's in the Box This listing covers the Ranger rotor silencer for the RL-8500 and RL-8500XLT. The manufacturer's description refers to silencer bands without stating a pack quantity, so if you need a specific number of bands — a spare set for the drawer, or bands for more than one machine — confirm the quantity with us when you order rather than assuming. We would rather answer the question than have you open a box that contains something other than what you pictured. Specifications Fits Ranger RL-8500, RL-8500XLT brake lathes Type Rotor silencer band Shipping weight 9 lbs (4 kg) Certification, Stated Honestly No third-party listing or approval scheme is claimed for this accessory in the data we hold, and we will not imply one. For a passive damping band that is a reasonable position rather than a gap — the machine it fits is the piece of equipment your insurer or safety auditor is interested in, not the band around the rotor. If your shop works to a written equipment standard that covers accessories as well as machines, read the wording before you buy. Shipping and Delivery Shipped within the lower 48 states, free of charge. At a published shipping weight of 9 lbs (4 kg) this normally travels as an ordinary parcel rather than as freight, though it may ride along on a freight shipment if you order it with a machine. Deliveries to a residential address carry an additional fee where freight applies, shown before you pay. Whatever way it arrives, look at it before you sign. If it comes on a freight delivery, note any visible damage on the bill of lading at the moment of delivery — signing a clean bill and finding the problem afterwards makes a claim much harder to pursue. Warranty Ranger publishes its warranty for this product as a downloadable document, and that document governs, so we do not paraphrase a term here. Download it from the product page and read the exclusions if coverage is part of your decision — note in particular how wear parts are treated, since a damping band is one. If you do need to make a claim, do not cut, modify or disassemble the part first. Diagnosing it yourself is the most common reason a legitimate claim gets refused. Photograph it as it is, keep the packaging, and call us before you take anything apart.
