Ranger R980XR Tire Changer and DST30P Balancer Package This package is defined by something it does not have. The R980XR is the swing-arm changer from a family whose other members carry a powered assist tower, and here the tower has been left off. That is a decision, not a downgrade, and whether it is the right decision for you comes down to a single question: what proportion of the tires you handle actually fight back? A short test for whether you need an assist tower Work through your last week of tire jobs. Count the ones where a bead genuinely resisted — a run-flat, a reinforced load-range light-truck tire, an aggressive off-road carcass with a stiff sidewall, a low-profile performance tire on a wide rim. If that count is a meaningful share of the total, buy a machine with an assist tower and stop reading here; the tower is worth its cost and your technicians will tell you so. If the count is a handful, the tower will spend the year parked in your bay taking up floor space and capital, and the R980XR is the machine that matches the work. Racing tires, ordinary pickup tires and general repair work are exactly what it was positioned for. What the swing arm does for the bay The mount and demount head on a swing-arm changer moves out sideways and clear of the wheel rather than tilting backwards on a column. The consequence is where the machine can live: nothing needs to travel behind it, so it can sit tight against a wall and the technician works from the front. In a bay that has been measured to the inch, a machine that does not need rear clearance is often the one that fits. The 30" capacity is unchanged by the absence of the tower — the range of rims the machine takes is a function of the clamps and the table, not of the assist. Then spend the difference on the balancer The DST30P is the machine you use on every wheel, every time, whether or not its bead was difficult. It runs a short spin cycle so the balancer is not what the technician waits for, and it calculates the smallest correction that will bring the assembly true rather than the first one that will. Its shaft is 36 mm, which is the figure to match if you are buying extra cones or adapters. In a shop where the tire mix does not justify an assist tower, putting the money into the balancer instead is straightforwardly the better allocation, because balancing is a hundred percent of the jobs and difficult beads are not. Being honest about what you give up A stiff sidewall on this machine will be a physical job. The bead lever, the lubricant and the technician's technique do the work that an assist tower would otherwise do, and on a genuinely difficult tire that means more time and more opportunity to mark a rim. If a customer arrives with a set of run-flats, you will change them — but you will feel the difference. We would rather write that sentence than have you discover it in the third week. The weights are included Adhesive steel tape weights come in the package, black and silver combination, supplied on rolls, each segment a quarter of an ounce and 1/2" wide, with the set listed at 22 lbs. It is the sort of inclusion that reads like padding and is not: a balancer with an empty weight drawer cannot finish a job, and tape weights are the right default on the alloy rims that make up most of what you will see. Perfect For General repair shops that change tires as part of a broader workload rather than as the whole business. Independent tire shops whose volume is passenger and light-truck rubber with ordinary sidewalls. Racing and track-day operations, which the current listing calls out specifically. Fleet workshops on standard tires. Shops with a tight bay footprint. If run-flats are routine for you, buy up to an assist-tower machine instead — we would rather sell you the right one. What's in the Box R980XR swing-arm tire changer, 30" capacity, no assist tower DST30P wheel balancer, 36 mm shaft Adhesive steel tape wheel weights on rolls, black and silver combination Beyond those three items nothing is itemised on this listing. If a specific cone, adapter or wheel-protection kit matters to you, ask us what ships in the crate before you plan around it. Key Figures Changer capacity 30" Assist tower Not fitted Balancer shaft 36 mm Tape weight width 1/2" Tape weight set 22 lbs Certification, without an acronym There is no independent third-party safety listing published for either machine in this package, and we will say so rather than let the silence do the work. Powered tire changers and balancers generally fall outside the third-party listing scheme that applies to vehicle lifts, which is a statement about the category and not a document anybody can file. If an insurer, a fleet contract or a local licensing authority requires paperwork on powered shop equipment, ask us for what the manufacturer publishes on these models while the decision is still open. Delivery to your shop Freight within the lower 48 states. Have a way to take a pallet off a truck before the delivery is scheduled — forklift, or pallet jack and enough people on level ground — or take terminal pickup from the carrier, which is usually simpler if you have no dock. Residential delivery is possible and a residential fee applies. Look over the freight before signing and record any damage on the delivery paperwork with the driver present, because a clean signature is exactly what a carrier will point at later. Warranty The manufacturer covers its range with a single warranty document; ask and we will send the current version for these models rather than paraphrase a term here. However long the term, do not let a faulty machine be taken apart before the claim is opened. A stripped unit is a hard unit to warrant, and the diagnosis intended to save a day of downtime is the most common way a good claim turns into a slow one.
