Ranger Plastic Tool Head for Ranger Tire Changers This is the hard plastic mount and demount head that takes steel out of the equation entirely at the one point where a tire changer touches the wheel. Ranger's published claim for it is unusually specific and worth repeating: the plastic body removes metal-on-metal contact altogether, and it is expected to last for the working life of the changer it is fitted to. Read the ordering note below before you buy, though, because this head does not mount on its own. What actually damages a rim during a tire change Almost nobody scratches a wheel with the bead breaker. The damage happens at the mount head, in the second or two when the lever is loaded and the head is pressed hard against the rim flange while the bead is walked over the lip. A steel head is harder than any wheel finish it will ever meet, so the contact is one-sided: paint, powder coat, clear coat over a machined face, chrome and polished aluminium all lose. The mark it leaves is usually a short bright arc right on the outer lip, which is the most visible part of the wheel and the first place a customer looks. Swapping the head for hard plastic changes the outcome because it changes which of the two surfaces is softer. The head yields slightly instead of the rim. That is the whole mechanism, and it is why a plastic head is standard equipment in shops that handle late-model alloys all day. Hard plastic, not a soft cover There is a meaningful difference between this and the clip-on plastic sleeves or tape that get used as a field fix. A cover sits between a steel head and the rim, so it can shift, ride up, wear through in the middle of a job, or fall off unnoticed halfway through a set of four. When it does, you are back to steel on aluminium without knowing it. A hard plastic head is the head. There is no sleeve to lose and no layer to wear through to something worse underneath. The construction is rigid enough to do the actual work of levering a bead, which is the part a soft protector cannot do, and it is the reason the durability claim in the product data is framed around the lifespan of the machine rather than a number of wheels. Read this before you order: the flange is not included The published feature list is direct about it, and we will be too. This head requires a duck head flange adapter, that adapter is not supplied with it, and it is sold separately. A head ordered on its own cannot be fitted to the changer. This trips people up regularly, because a mount head looks like a complete part in a photograph. If you are ordering the head for the first time rather than replacing one on a machine that already has the adapter fitted, you need both items. If you are not sure which situation you are in, look at how the current head attaches to the arm on your changer, or send us the model number and we will tell you. Will It Fit? The head is listed for Ranger tire changers and is supplied with the flange adapter as its mounting interface. The product data does not publish a model-by-model fitment chart, so we are not going to imply one exists. What we can tell you is that fitment is decided at the adapter, not at the head, which is why the adapter is called out separately in the first place. Ask us before ordering if your changer is an older machine or was bought secondhand. It is a small item to receive and store: shipping dimensions of 4" x 3" x 3" (101 mm x 76 mm x 76 mm) at a shipping weight of 3 lbs (1.3 kg). Perfect For Shops handling late-model alloy wheels where every rim through the door has a finish that shows a mark. Dealership tire bays fitting wheels on cars that are inspected by the owner minutes after the work is done. Custom and performance wheel fitters working with polished, chrome and machined-face rims, where one arc on the lip can write off a wheel that is not cheap to replace. Any changer that is about to see an expensive set and currently has a steel head fitted. What's in the Box The plastic tool head. The duck head flange adapter it mounts to is not included and is ordered separately, per the manufacturer's own note on this product. Specifications Part Plastic mount and demount head Construction Hard plastic, non-marring Contact with the rim No metal-on-metal contact Required to mount Duck head flange adapter, not included, sold separately Shipping dimensions 4" x 3" x 3" (101 mm x 76 mm x 76 mm) Shipping weight 3 lbs (1.3 kg) Certification, stated plainly The data for this accessory claims no independent laboratory listing and no third-party safety certification, and we are not going to suggest otherwise. What it claims is a material and a behaviour: hard plastic, non-marring against the wheel. Those are the claims to hold it to. If a fleet contract, an insurer or a manufacturer's warranty programme requires you to show documented tooling compliance for wheel work, ask us for the manufacturer's paperwork before ordering rather than assuming a certificate exists behind the part. Shipping and delivery This ships as a small parcel rather than as freight, within the lower 48 states. Look the carton over on arrival and note any crushing or a split seam on the carrier's paperwork before you sign for it — a note made at delivery is what turns a damage claim into a short conversation instead of a long one. If you would rather collect than wait for a carrier, the Ranger pick-up locations are listed further down this page. Warranty Ranger publishes a written warranty document for its products, and that document is what governs a claim rather than any summary written on a store page, so we will not paraphrase a term here. Ask us for the current copy if you want to read it first. Practical advice for a part like this one: if it arrives cracked or does not seat properly on the adapter, contact us before you trim, drill or reshape it to make it fit. A modified part cannot be assessed, and altering it almost always ends a claim. Product Features Helps protect expensive alloy wheels Must have duck head flange adapter. Not included.
