Ranger DST30P Wheel Balancer The DST30P is the Ranger balancer that borrows its encoder from a bigger machine. Ranger builds a 64-tooth magnetic transducer encoder for its larger DST-64T balancer. On the DST30P that same encoder is fitted into a deliberately narrowed chassis — that is the entire reason this model exists. You get the finer angular resolution of the bigger unit without the digital extras, the add-ons or the floor space that come with it. It is a single-shaft dynamic balancer built for shops turning a steady volume of car, light-truck and SUV wheels, where the cost of a near-miss is a comeback rather than a callback. The tooling package is unusually complete for a machine this size: three passenger cones plus a heavy-duty truck cone that Ranger once sold as an optional accessory and now ships as standard. Why the encoder count is the specification that matters An encoder converts the shaft's rotary position into a digital signal the processor can read. The more teeth on the encoder wheel, the finer the slices of rotation the machine can distinguish — and the more precisely it can tell you where top-dead-center actually is when the LED indicators light up. That is not an abstraction. Imprecise angular positioning is exactly why a wheel can come off a balancer reading zero and still need a second correction on the road. Ranger's precision-cut square encoder teeth are there to make that conversion clean, so the machine reaches maximum profile and top-dead-center positioning quickly rather than hunting for it. The published resolution is 0.01 ounce and 1.4°, balancing increments are 0.25 oz, and stated accuracy is +/- 1 gram (.035 oz). In day-to-day terms that means less lead hung on the rim to reach the same result — which shows up as a lower weight bill at the end of a busy month, not as a number on a screen. Direct-Axis drive: one belt, one sensor, very little to service The Direct-Axis drive system puts a single belt between the motor and the unbalance sensor. There is no gearbox, no chain and no secondary transmission stage to tension, wear out or replace — and on a balancer that is where most recurring maintenance cost actually lives. The 1.5 HP motor spins the assembly at a low 180 RPM balancing speed, which keeps the wheel controllable and the machine quiet, and automatic electronic braking stops it without the operator reaching for anything. Reading the imbalance is a separate job from spinning the wheel, and Ranger splits it out. Dual-component quartz piezoelectric load sensors, working with the digital rotation encoder, measure longitudinal, transversal and shear force at the same time, so the machine detects imbalance in three directions rather than inferring it from one. High-rigidity quartz crystal has no meaningful fatigue life in this application, which is why load-cell drift is not the failure mode you plan for on this class of machine. Will It Fit? This is a floor-standing machine, not a benchtop one, and the crate is the part people underestimate. Wheel diameter capacity: 8" - 30" Rim width capacity: 1.2" - 20" Maximum assembled tire diameter: 50" (1,270 mm) — measure the tire, not the rim Maximum tire weight: 150 lbs. (68 kg) Power: 1.5 HP motor, 110/220V, 50 / 60 Hz, 1Ph Crated: 370 lbs. (168 kg) at 44" x 30" x 46" Published working temperature range: -5°C / 27°F - 50°C / 82°F Two things are the buyer's responsibility and we would rather raise them now than after a carrier has left a crate on your dock. First, have an electrician confirm your available circuit against the motor rating above before delivery day. Second, check that the crated dimensions clear your roll-up door and any turn between the door and the bay — a 44" x 30" x 46" crate at 370 lbs. is not something two people walk around a tight corner. If you are unsure, send us your doorway measurements and we will work through it with you. The cone package, in full Cones are where balancer packages quietly differ, so here is the whole set rather than a summary. Cone Hub range Passenger / light truck cone 1.75" - 2.75" Passenger / light truck cone 2.75" - 3.50" Passenger / light truck cone 3.50" - 4.25" Truck cone (standard on this unit) 4.50" - 5.00" Double-sided centering truck cone kit (sold separately) 4.75" - 6.75" The 4.5" - 5.00" truck cone arriving as standard is the most useful change on this model for a shop that occasionally sees a one-ton pickup. The larger double-sided centering kit covering 4.75" - 6.75" hubs is a separate purchase but does fit this machine, so a shop that grows into heavier work is not buying a second balancer. Mounting is handled by a rubber quick-nut bell adapter with a non-marring rear cone mount pressure cup, which holds the assembly firmly without marking an expensive wheel face. Working on it day to day The display is raised on a tower rather than laid flat on the housing, and it is fully adjustable. That sounds cosmetic until you are working under shop lights that put a glare across a flat panel every afternoon, or until a shorter or taller technician has to stoop over the same machine for eight hours. The touch-pad keypad carries simple icons rather than dense labels, a multi-user save function holds presets so two technicians are not resetting each other's parameters, and a side shelf with an open-top design keeps bulk rolls of adhesive tape weight in reach of the hand that needs them. Side cone storage pegs keep the cones on the machine instead of in a drawer across the bay. Perfect For Independent repair shops doing tires alongside general service, where the balancer has to earn its floor space. Dedicated tire stores that need short floor-to-floor times without paying for a video or laser machine. Light fleet operations running passenger vans and one-ton pickups on the same lot. Serious home and enthusiast garages with performance or aftermarket wheels that a cone-and-bubble setup will not do justice to. Shop equipment of this kind is not regulated the way a vehicle lift is, so for most buyers this changes nothing. It is worth a phone call first if your insurer, your franchise agreement or a local inspector asks for a specific listing document covering shop equipment — ask us before you order and we will tell you exactly what the manufacturer supplies with the machine. Shipping and delivery This balancer ships as freight within the lower 48 states. Freight is not parcel service: the driver brings the crate to the back of the truck and no further, so you need a forklift, a loading dock or enough hands to get 370 lbs. off a trailer — or you can arrange to collect from the carrier's terminal instead. Delivery to a residential address carries a residential fee, which is quoted at checkout rather than printed here. When the crate arrives, inspect it before you sign: note any damage on the delivery receipt in writing, photograph it, and tell us the same day. A signature on a clean receipt is very hard to walk back later. Warranty Ranger publishes the warranty terms for this product in the warranty document available on this page, and that published document governs — we do not restate the terms here, because a summary that drifts from the document helps nobody. One practical warning applies regardless of what any warranty says: if a unit develops a fault you intend to claim on, do not disassemble it first. Opening a sealed drive or sensor assembly to "have a look" is one of the fastest ways to turn a covered fault into an uncovered one. Call us and we will start the process with the manufacturer.
