Ranger Clip-On Steel Wheel Weights Coated - 2.5 Oz - 25 Pcs These are steel wheel weights, and that fact is the reason they exist in this form. The clip-on weight was a lead product for most of a century, and the move to steel changed how it behaves on the wheel as well as how it is disposed of. This box holds twenty-five coated steel clip-ons at 2.5 oz each — a mid-range step, and in most tyre bays one of the sizes that empties fastest. Steel rather than lead, and why that may be your problem too Lead wheel weights have been withdrawn from a great many workshops, some by regulation and some by their own purchasing or environmental policy. Requirements differ by state and by municipality, and they change, so treat this as a question to answer for your own location rather than one a product description can settle: if you are subject to a restriction on lead wheel weights, verify the specific requirement that applies to you. Steel is the usual replacement, and that is what these are. There is a handling difference that comes with the material, quite apart from the compliance question. Lead deforms; steel does not. A steel clip keeps its profile through fitting, removal and storage, so the weights in the bottom of the box are the same shape as the ones on top, and a weight that comes off a wheel during a re-balance is generally still usable. The middle of the range, and why that matters for stock Corrections are not distributed evenly. Very small ones and very large ones are the exception; the bulk of what a balancer calls for in ordinary passenger-car and light-truck work sits in the middle of the range, which is exactly where 2.5 oz falls. That has a practical consequence for how you buy: mid-range sizes get consumed several times faster than the extremes, and a shop stocking a fixed assortment tray will always be short of them. Buying the middle sizes as single-value boxes fixes that. Each size is re-ordered on its own rate of use rather than on the pace of a tray, and a technician gets the size the machine called for without sorting through compartments. Removable, repositionable, re-usable This is the quiet advantage clip-ons hold over adhesive weights, and it is worth understanding before choosing between the two formats. A clip-on goes on and comes off with a tool and nothing else. There is no solvent, no cleaning of the barrel, no residue to scrape, no cure time and no waiting for a surface to reach a working temperature. If the balance needs adjusting, the weight moves. That matters in two situations in particular. The first is a wheel that needs a couple of iterations to settle — a repaired rim, or a tyre that has been re-indexed. The second is winter, when an adhesive on a cold wheel is at its least reliable and a mechanical clip simply does not care. The coating is part of this: because the clip bears through a finished surface rather than bare metal, repeated fitting and removal is less punishing on the rim flange. Choosing the right weight, briefly Fit what the machine calls for, at the position it calls for, in as few pieces as the range allows. If the required correction is much larger than usual, look for a mechanical cause before you solve it with mass — a badly seated bead, debris inside the tyre or a damaged rim will all show up as a large imbalance, and re-indexing the tyre on the rim frequently makes most of it disappear. Once the weight is on, spin again and confirm rather than assuming, and clean the flange of brake dust and old adhesive when you strip the previous weights, because a clip cannot bear properly on a contaminated surface. Perfect For Busy tyre bays, where mid-range sizes are consumed fastest and an assortment tray is always short of them. General repair shops balancing wheels alongside other work, wanting one dependable size on the shelf. Workshops operating a lead-free purchasing policy on fitted consumables. Cold-climate shops, where a mechanical clip is more predictable than an adhesive on a cold rim. Certification, stated plainly The data we hold on this box does not include an independent laboratory listing or a third-party approval mark, and we are not going to write one onto the page. For a balancing consumable that is unremarkable. It only becomes a live question where a fleet contract, an insurer or a municipal purchasing specification requires documented approval on the parts you fit; if that is your situation, ask us before you order and we will request whatever documentation the manufacturer holds rather than guess at it. Shipping and delivery Orders go to the contiguous United States, and the delivery charge is generated at checkout from live carrier rates rather than quoted in this description, because carrier pricing does not hold still. If it suits you better to collect, the pickup locations for this brand are listed in the Pick Up and Delivery section on this page. If a shipment travels as freight instead of parcel, plan for someone to be there to receive it and for a means of getting it off the truck, or arrange terminal collection. Residential delivery is a separate service carrying its own fee, quoted at checkout. Inspect the package before signing and note any damage on the delivery receipt at the moment of delivery — once you have signed clean, a claim becomes extremely difficult. Warranty This item sits under Ranger’s single product-line warranty document rather than carrying a term of its own, and the current copy is on file with us. We have not stated a duration because the fact sheet does not give one, and a guessed warranty period is the kind of detail that turns into an argument later. Ask and we will send you the document before you order. If a box is damaged, short or incorrect on arrival, keep it and the packaging and contact us before anything else. Do not bend, grind or otherwise alter a clip to make it grip a flange it was not made for — an altered weight cannot be assessed for a claim, and it is not a weight that should be on a wheel at road speed.
