Beginning his career in 2016 since joining the Ajax from Willem II in 2015, De Jong would be in and out of the first team before establishing himself in the 2016/17 season, reaching the UEFA Europa League final, Ajax's first European final in twenty years.Frenkie De Jong would make his national team debut in 2018, alongside his club success winning the Eredivisie & KNVB Cup double in 2018/19 after a barren four years without a league title. The rise of the young midfielder's stock coincided with his Ajax peers as the young core of Donny Van de Beek and captain Mathijs De Ligt broke into the Oranje squad after a disappointing 2018 World Cup qualifier saw Netherlands failed to qualify for Russia. The core group would become the nucleus of Oranje's charge to the newly minted 2018/19 UEFA Nations League Group A final, losing out to Portugal as the Oranje missed out on their first international trophy since 1988.
