Hofmann monty 4400: a chuck built for wheels that weigh more than a small car's worth of steel The monty 4400 is a truck tire changer, and the number that defines it is the one describing what the frame is allowed to carry: wheels of up to 1500 kg. That is not a passenger-car machine with a bigger motor. It is a double-reinforced frame wrapped around a rugged hydraulic chuck, designed on the assumption that the assembly on the table is heavy enough to be dangerous if the machine flexes. Everything else about the specification follows from that. The chuck is hydraulic rather than pneumatic. The power supply is three-phase. The machine itself weighs 1,700 lbs., which is what a frame has to weigh if it is going to stay rigid while it rotates a commercial wheel assembly. These are the trade-offs of a truck machine and they are worth understanding before you buy, because two of them place real demands on your building. Will it fit? The three-phase question comes first Before anything else: this machine requires a 208V, 3Ph, 60Hz supply. Three-phase power is the single most common reason a truck tire changer cannot be installed where the buyer intended, and it is not a small retrofit. If your building has single-phase service only, the cost of getting three-phase to the bay belongs in your purchase decision from the beginning rather than as a surprise after delivery. Power supply: 208V, 3Ph, 60Hz. Machine weight: 1,700 lbs. Clamping centre bore range: 14-32" (356-813mm). Maximum wheel width: 43" (1,092mm). Chuck speed: 4/8 rpm, preset with a switch. The rest of the siting work is yours. A machine of this mass needs a sound, level floor and a clear working circle around the chuck large enough for a commercial wheel to be manoeuvred, not just parked. The specification does not publish a floor footprint or a required ceiling height for this listing, so measure the bay and the route into it and confirm anything marginal with us before ordering. Confirm the maximum wheel diameter before you order Published figures for the largest wheel this machine will take differ. The specification table on this page gives a wheel diameter of 92.5" (2,350mm); the maximum tire diameter published for the same machine reads 93". They are close, and they may well be measuring slightly different things. If your work sits at the top of that range, ask us to confirm the current figure against the manufacturer's data sheet before you order. Why the chuck design is the whole machine On a truck tire changer the chuck does two jobs at once: it has to grip a wide range of centre bores securely, and it has to hold that grip against the very high torque of breaking and mounting a commercial bead. The 14-32" (356-813mm) clamping range is what lets one machine cover light commercial rims through to large truck wheels without a drawer full of adaptors, and the reinforced frame is what stops that grip from being compromised by flex under load. Two chuck speeds, selected on a switch, are the practical counterpart. The slower setting gives control and torque where a bead is fighting you; the faster one saves time on the routine part of the cycle. A single-speed machine forces a compromise on every wheel. The bead breaker disc, and two hands on two controls The patented bead breaker disc is designed to work its way around the bead rather than attack it, which is what protects both the tire and the rim flange on assemblies that are expensive to replace. The control unit adds the other half of the productivity story: a switch lets the operator drive two operations at the same time, so tool positioning and rotation are not a strictly sequential process. On a commercial tire that saves a genuine part of the cycle, repeated on every wheel, every day. Perfect For Commercial truck and trailer shops handling steel and alloy truck wheels as routine work. Fleet maintenance operations where tire work happens in-house and downtime is measured against vehicles off the road. Agricultural and plant service businesses dealing with large-diameter, wide assemblies. Tire shops adding a commercial line that already have, or can install, three-phase power. What is included The feature list for this machine refers to a range of standard accessories, but our data does not enumerate them and we will not guess at a list. Ask us for the accessory schedule in writing before ordering, particularly if a specific clamping adaptor or a bead-breaking accessory is needed for the wheels you run. Specifications Clamping centre bore range 14-32" (356-813mm) Wheel width 43" (1,092mm) Wheel diameter 92.5" (2,350mm) — see the note above on 93" Chuck speed 4/8 rpm Wheel handling capacity up to 1500 kg Power supply 208V, 3Ph, 60Hz Weight 1,700 lbs. Certification and compliance, stated honestly Our product data for this tire changer does not list a third-party safety certification, and we will not imply one that our records do not support. A manufacturer's own declaration of conformity and an independent listing from a testing body are different documents, and it is normally the second that an insurer or a safety inspector asks to see on shop equipment of this size. If a listing is a condition of your insurance or of a customer contract, ask us before ordering and we will request the documentation from the manufacturer rather than speculate. Installation of the three-phase supply is a separate matter governed by your local electrical code and your electrician. Delivery, installation and site access This machine ships as freight, not as a parcel, and it travels crated on a pallet. Delivery, setup and instruction arrangements for Hofmann equipment are set out in the Pick Up and Delivery section further down this page, and warehouse collection is offered on much of this range — tell us at the time of order which you want, because the two are booked differently. Shipping is to addresses in the contiguous United States. Three things are the buyer's responsibility whichever route you choose. Measure the path from the delivery point to the working position, including door widths and any turn a crated machine has to make. If the delivery address is a home rather than a commercial address, say so before you order — residential delivery is arranged differently and a residential fee applies. And inspect the crate before you sign: note any damage, crushed corner or shifted strapping on the delivery receipt at the moment of delivery, and photograph it. A signed clean receipt makes a damage claim very difficult to pursue afterwards, and that is the single most common way a buyer ends up out of pocket on freight equipment. Warranty Warranty terms for this machine are published on our warranty claims page rather than quoted here, so that what you read is the current policy rather than a figure copied into a description and left to go stale. One practical warning that applies to every powered machine we sell: if something fails, contact us before disassembling the unit or attempting an internal repair. Stripping an assembly down before the claim is raised routinely voids the cover, and it also destroys the evidence the manufacturer needs to see.
