Chicago Pneumatic RCP-7581VS — 80 Gallon Two-Stage Air Compressor, 7.5 HP, 208-230V 1 Phase The interesting thing about the RCP-7581VS is not on the spec sheet as a headline: it is a mixed-metal pump. The cylinders are solid cast iron, but the heads, the intercooler and the crankcase are aluminium, and there is an aftercooler integrated into the machine. That combination is a deliberate heat-management decision, and on a two-stage compressor heat is the thing that decides how long the pump lasts and how much water ends up in your air lines. Here is why it matters. A two-stage pump takes air that has already been compressed once — and is therefore already hot — and compresses it again. The second stage is the hot end of the machine. Cast iron is superb at resisting wear, which is exactly what you want on a cylinder wall, but it is a poor radiator. Aluminium sheds heat several times faster. Putting iron where the rings rub and aluminium where the heat has to leave, then running the discharge through an aftercooler before it reaches the tank, gets you a lower discharge temperature than an all-iron pump of the same rating. Lower discharge temperature means less moisture carried into the receiver, less thermal stress on the oil, and a machine that can take a long busy afternoon rather than a short one. Built to run without someone watching it Compressors fail expensively when nobody is in the room. Three of the fitted items on this unit exist for exactly that reason and are worth understanding as a set rather than a bullet list. The low oil level switch shuts the machine down before the pump runs dry, which is the single most common way a good compressor is destroyed by an otherwise careful shop. The automatic tank drain dumps condensate on its own, so the water that a hardworking compressor makes every day is not left sitting in the bottom of the receiver rusting it from the inside — a manual drain only protects you on the days somebody remembers. The magnetic starter is fitted as standard here, in a NEMA 1 enclosure, and it provides thermal protection for the motor: it drops the motor out on overload rather than letting it cook its own windings. Plenty of compressors in this class leave the starter as a separate purchase. This one does not, which removes an installation-day surprise and a second invoice. Add the fully enclosed high-flow belt guard — enclosed for hands, high-flow so the pump still gets cooling air — and the start-stop pressure switch control, and you have a machine designed to be switched on and left to work. Will it fit, and what to tell your electrician This is a vertical 80 gallon machine, so it asks for height rather than floor. The listing records an overall length of 39" and a weight of 479 lbs. Give it a level, solid pad: nearly five hundred pounds standing on a small footprint will work its mounts loose on an uneven floor over a season, and a vertical tank is less forgiving about that than a horizontal one. Electrically it wants 208-230V single-phase service at 1 phase. The exact breaker size and conductor gauge depend on the length of your run and on local code, so have a licensed electrician size the circuit — that is not us dodging the question, it is the only correct answer. The tank outlet is 3/4", which is the connection your shop pipework has to meet. Maximum working pressure is 175 PSI. Your responsibility, stated plainly: the floor, the electrical supply, the disconnect, and getting the machine into position are the buyer's to arrange. Confirm all three before the compressor is on a truck rather than after. Two figures to confirm before you order Published figures for the motor and the air delivery differ. Both are set out below, each attributed to its source. Motor rating. The manufacturer's description and the product title call this a 7.5 HP machine; the specification field on this page records 8 HP. Those describe different motors, and the difference reaches your breaker and conductor sizing. Air delivery. The manufacturer's description says the unit delivers up to 25.25 ACFM; the specification field on this page records 23 CFM. ACFM and CFM can be two different measurement bases rather than a straight contradiction, which is exactly what we will have Chicago Pneumatic confirm. If the delivered air figure decides whether this compressor keeps up with your tool list — and on a two-stage machine at this size it usually does — ask us to confirm the rating in writing before you buy, and we will get it straight from Chicago Pneumatic. Perfect for The busy independent workshop running impact tools, a spray gun and a tyre machine, where the compressor is expected to keep up all day rather than catch its breath between jobs. Light industrial and fabrication work that needs steady pressure at the top of the range instead of a single-stage machine's shorter duty cycle. Shops with ceiling height but no spare floor — the vertical receiver puts the capacity above the footprint. Anyone who leaves the compressor running unattended, and wants the oil switch, the auto drain and the starter protection fitted from the factory. What is fitted Taken from this listing's own feature list, not from a generic brochure: solid cast iron tank construction with an integrated aftercooler; ASME/CRN certified tank and safety valves; start-stop pressure switch control; a magnetic starter in a NEMA 1 enclosure providing motor thermal protection; a fully enclosed high-flow belt guard; a low oil level switch; and an automatic tank drain. The listing does not itemise loose accessories, so we do not claim any — if you need to know whether a particular fitting or hose is in the crate, ask and we will check the packing list. Specifications Model RCP-7581VS Tank 80 gallon, vertical Pump Two-stage, aluminium with cast iron sleeve Maximum pressure 175 PSI Power 208-230V, 1 phase Magnetic starter Fitted, NEMA 1 enclosure Tank outlet 3/4" Overall length 39" Weight 479 lbs Air dryer Not fitted Origin Made in the USA Overall width and height appear in our data as bare numbers with no unit recorded against them, so we have left them out rather than guess. Ask us and we will confirm the full envelope before you plan the space. Certification, stated honestly The manufacturer's own description for this machine claims an ASME/CRN certified tank and safety valves. That is a pressure-vessel certification, and it is the one that matters most to a shop inspector. What our data does not record for this compressor is any third-party electrical or product safety listing, and we are not going to imply one by writing an acronym the data never mentions. If your insurer, your local inspector or your company's own policy requires a specific listing on shop equipment, tell us which one before you order and we will confirm in writing whether this unit carries it. Shipping and delivery This compressor ships as freight, to the lower 48 states. It arrives on a truck, on a pallet, and the receiving end is yours to arrange: you need a forklift, a loading dock, or enough hands and equipment to get several hundred pounds off a trailer safely. If you have none of those, take terminal pickup and collect it yourself — that is often the easier option for a machine this size. Delivery to a residential address carries a residential fee. Inspect the crate before you sign. Note any damage on the bill of lading at the moment of delivery, with the driver present. A signature on a clean BOL is the carrier's evidence that the machine arrived intact, and it makes a damage claim afterwards very hard to win. Photographs of the pallet, taken before anything is moved, cost you two minutes and are worth having. Warranty Chicago Pneumatic publishes the warranty terms for its compressor range, and this listing links to that published policy rather than restating a term. We have deliberately not printed a duration here, because our own record for this model does not state one and an invented number in a warranty section is worse than no number at all. Ask us for the current terms in writing before you buy and we will supply them. One thing that is true of every warranty in this category: do not disassemble the pump, the motor or the pressure switch before a claim is raised. Inspection of the failed part as it failed is normally a condition of cover, and a stripped machine is usually a declined claim. Call us first, take photographs, leave it alone.
