Chicago Pneumatic RCP-4981VNS — 5 HP Two-Stage, 80 Gallon Vertical, 230V Start with the fact this listing buries and every competing page ignores: the RCP-4981VNS does not include a magnetic starter. Our spec record for this machine says so plainly, and it is the difference between this model and its Iron Series cousins, which do. That is not a fault, and it is not a downgrade sprung on you — it is why this compressor sits at the value end of a two-stage range that is otherwise very similar. But it is the single most useful thing to know before you order, because a magnetic starter does two jobs a pressure switch alone cannot. It switches the motor's heavy current with contacts built for it, and it gives thermal overload protection that drops a struggling motor out before it cooks its own windings. On a 5 HP motor, both of those matter. Budget for a starter alongside the machine, or confirm with your electrician that the protection you already have on that circuit is suitable. Ask us and we will quote the two together in writing, so the starter is on site before installation day rather than after it. What you get instead: a proper two-stage pump with an aftercooler With the starter question settled, the rest of the machine is straightforward and well specified. It is a genuine two-stage compressor with a solid cast iron cylinder on the 5 HP electric motor, and — the part worth noticing — an integrated aftercooler. The aftercooler is the component most buyers do not think about and most regret not having. Compressing air heats it, and hot air holds moisture that condenses the moment it cools down again — which it does in your tank, your pipework, and eventually your tools and your paintwork. An aftercooler drops the discharge temperature before the air reaches the receiver, so a large share of that water falls out where the drain can deal with it rather than travelling downstream. On a machine expected to work rather than to sit, it is a genuine quality-of-air feature, not a brochure line. The pump is enclosed by a fully enclosed motor and high flow belt guard: enclosed so hands and sleeves stay out, high flow so the pump still gets the cooling air it needs. Control is a start-stop pressure switch. It is built in the USA. Will it fit, and what to tell your electrician This is a vertical 80 gallon machine, so it wants ceiling height rather than floor area. Our record gives an overall length of 39" and a weight of 382 lbs — notably lighter than the all-cast-iron models in the same tank size, which makes it easier to move into an awkward space but no less deserving of a level, solid pad. Leave air around the belt guard and the aftercooler; a compressor shut into a cupboard is a compressor making its own heat problem. Supply is 230 Volt at 1 phase. Breaker size and conductor gauge depend on your run length and local code, so have a licensed electrician specify them — and raise the starter question with the same person, in the same conversation. The tank outlet is 3/4", which sets the fitting your shop pipework has to meet. Yours to arrange: the pad, the electrical supply and disconnect, the motor protection discussed above, and unloading the machine when it arrives. Check the air figures before you order Published figures for delivered air and maximum pressure differ between the sources on this page, so each one is set out below with its source named. The description says the unit provides 15 CFM at maximum pressure. The specification block lists 16.1 CFM at 100 PSI, and a lower figure again at maximum pressure. Maximum pressure itself is given two ways: the specification block says 165 PSI; a separate spec field on the same listing says 175 PSI. Some of that is explainable — delivered air always falls as pressure rises, so a figure at 100 PSI and a figure at maximum pressure should differ. The maximum pressure disagreement is not explainable from what we hold, and it is the one that changes what the machine is. So: no headline CFM claim from us. If delivered air or top pressure decides whether this compressor suits your tool list, ask us to confirm both in writing before you buy and we will get them from Chicago Pneumatic rather than from a listing. Perfect for The one- or two-bay shop stepping up from single-stage, where the jump in duty cycle matters more than the last few CFM. Well-equipped home and farm workshops that already have a suitable protected circuit, or an electrician on the way. Buyers who want the aftercooler and the cast iron cylinder without paying for the heavier all-iron pump. Anyone replacing a worn compressor in a hurry — provided the starter is ordered at the same time. What is fitted From the listing's own feature list: a two-stage pump; a solid cast iron cylinder on the 5 HP electric motor; an integrated aftercooler; a fully enclosed motor with high flow belt guard; and start-stop pressure switch control. A magnetic starter is not included. No loose accessories are itemised, so none are claimed here — ask and we will check the packing list. Overall width and height are recorded in our data as bare numbers with no unit, so they are not printed either; ask us and we will confirm the envelope before you plan the space. Certification, stated honestly This is the section where it would be easy to borrow a claim from a sibling product, so we will not. Some compressors in this Chicago Pneumatic range are described as carrying a certified pressure vessel and safety valves. Our data for this particular model does not state a tank certification at all, and no third-party product safety listing is claimed for it either. That is not evidence the tank is uncertified — it is evidence our record is incomplete, which is a different thing and is the honest way to put it. If a documented pressure-vessel certification is a condition of your insurance, your local inspection regime or your company's own equipment policy, ask us before you order and we will get written confirmation from the manufacturer. Do not take silence on a listing as an answer either way. Shipping and delivery Freight only, within the lower 48 states, crated on a pallet. At 382 lbs this is at the lighter end of the compressors we ship, but it is still a truck delivery and still not a two-person carry — arrange a forklift, a dock, or take terminal pickup and collect it yourself. Deliveries to a residential address carry a residential fee. Inspect it before you sign. Damage written on the bill of lading in front of the driver is a claim; damage found after a clean signature usually is not. Photograph the crate on the pallet before you open anything. Warranty Our specification record for this model states a 2 year warranty, and Chicago Pneumatic publishes the full terms for its compressor range separately — this listing links to that policy rather than paraphrasing it. Whatever the terms turn out to say in detail, the practical rule is the same as for every compressor: if something fails, do not take the pump, motor or pressure switch apart before the claim is open. The part normally has to be inspected as it failed, and a dismantled machine is the most common reason a good claim gets refused. Stop using it, photograph it, and call us.
