Chicago Pneumatic QRS5.0HP-3: quiet enough to stand next to, all day Noise is the specification most compressor buyers discover after installation instead of before it. This machine is rated 62 dBA — conversational-office territory rather than machine-room territory — and that single figure changes where it is allowed to live. A compressor you can site inside the working space does not need a shed built for it, does not need a long pipe run back to the shop, and does not cost you a working relationship with the unit next door. It is a 5 HP rotary screw on a 60 Gallon horizontal tank, rated 100% duty, delivering 16.6 CFM at 150 psi on 208-230/460V 3 Phase supply. Chicago Pneumatic's rotary screws are manufactured in Italy by Atlas Copco, described in this listing as the world's largest air compressor manufacturer. Why the noise number is a siting decision, not a comfort feature Rotary screws are quieter than piston machines by their mechanics. Two rotors mesh and move air continuously; nothing reciprocates, nothing hammers. That is why a machine of this output can be specified at 62 dBA at all. The consequence follows the noise around the building. Loud compressors get banished — to a lean-to, a yard cabinet, the far end of the unit — and every foot of pipe between the receiver and the tool is pressure lost on the way. Put the machine where the work is and you keep the pressure you paid for, hear a fault developing while it is still cheap to fix, and notice the drain that has not been opened this week. Quiet is a maintenance feature disguised as a comfort feature. It also makes the machine tolerable in a mixed building — a workshop with an office above, a unit with neighbours, a dealership where customers walk past the shop door. Continuous duty at 16.6 CFM, and what that actually covers The rating that separates this from a piston compressor of similar output is 100% duty. There is no percentage-of-the-hour limit to respect, no cooling pause, no gradual sag in line pressure while the shop keeps working. The machine is designed to run for as long as air is being drawn. At 16.6 CFM at 150 psi that supports a genuinely busy small shop: impact guns, ratchets, blow guns, a tyre machine, a die grinder in intermittent use. Where you should think harder is continuous high-consumption work — sustained sanding, blasting, or a spray gun running for long periods — because those consume air at a constant rate rather than in bursts, and the honest way to size for them is to add up the consumption of the tools you will genuinely run at the same time. Tell us the list and we will sanity-check it with you before you order rather than after. Will It Fit? Power, space and siting Checking supply, floor and ventilation ahead of delivery is the buyer's responsibility. The supply is the one to settle first, because it is the only item on this list that cannot be worked around later. Electrical supply: 208-230/460V, 3 Phase. A single-phase building cannot run this variant. Conductor sizing and breaker rating follow the connected voltage and the length of the run, and they are your electrician's decision. Tank: 60 Gallon, horizontal — a low package that sits against a wall and clears a low ceiling or a roller-door track. Footprint: overall length 56.3". Overall width and height are recorded in our data as bare numbers with no unit, so they are not printed here; a number without a unit is not a measurement. Ask us if the footprint is the deciding factor. Weight: 419 lbs. Level, solid floor — a rocking machine works its fittings loose. Tank outlet: 1/2", which is the figure to size your shop main against. Ventilation: quiet is achieved partly with an enclosure, and an enclosure keeps heat in. Give it airflow and a route for warm air to leave the room. Perfect For Workshops where the compressor has to live indoors — a small unit, a shared building, an office overhead. One- to three-bay service shops on three-phase power that run air continuously rather than in short bursts. Dealership and fleet workshops where noise near a customer or a service desk is a real constraint. Shops replacing a piston compressor that has become the loudest thing in the building. What's in the Box The compressor as a mounted package: the rotary screw airend and drive motor on the 60 Gallon horizontal receiver, with its control gear, ready for a supply connection and shop pipework. Not included: the electrical installation and its circuit, any downstream drying or filtration, pipework from the 1/2" outlet, and the factory authorized start-up described under Warranty below. We list only what this product's data states is supplied. If your plan depends on an item being in the crate, ask us to confirm it in writing before you order. Specifications Output and pressure Rated flow 16.6 CFM at 150 psi Maximum pressure 150 psi Duty cycle 100% Motor and supply Rated power 5 HP Supply 208-230/460V Phase 3 Phase Magnetic starter Fitted Tank, size and noise Receiver 60 Gallon, horizontal Tank outlet 1/2" Overall length 56.3" Weight 419 lbs Noise 62 dBA Air dryer Not fitted Electronic drain valve Not fitted Two absences worth planning around rather than discovering: there is no dryer in this package, so paint and instrumentation work needs downstream treatment; and there is no electronic drain, so condensate comes out by hand on a schedule someone actually keeps. Approvals, stated plainly This product's data does not claim a third-party safety listing for the packaged machine, and we are not going to put one on the page in the hope nobody checks. What it carries is a manufacturer's specification and a factory commissioning route. Most buyers will never need more than that. A minority will: insurers, fleet standards and some local electrical inspectors ask for independent listing documentation on hard-wired shop plant, and a manufacturer's own declaration is a different document with a different weight. If that is a condition on your site, ask us before ordering and we will confirm in writing what paperwork ships with this model. Shipping and delivery This machine ships as palletised freight within the lower 48 states, free of charge. Work out the unload before you order. 419 lbs wants a forklift, a loading dock, or a pallet jack with flat ground; the driver's job finishes at the tailboard. If none of those exist at your address, choose terminal pickup and collect the pallet from the carrier's yard instead. Delivery to a home address is a residential delivery and carries a residential fee. Inspect it while the driver is still there. Look over the enclosure, receiver, panel and fittings, and write any damage or shortage onto the bill of lading before signing. Damage noted on the paperwork is claimable; damage found after a clean signature usually is not. Warranty Cover is 1 year as standard, with a 5 Year term available where the machine is commissioned through a factory authorized start-up — for which this listing quotes a typical fee of $350. Treat that as an indication, not a fixed price: it is described as typical, and it is charged by the commissioning engineer rather than by us, so ask for a current quotation before you build it into a budget. The visit is worth having on its own merits — rotation direction, oil level and control settings checked by somebody who does it every week is inexpensive reliability on a machine intended to run all day. If a fault develops, stop the compressor, isolate the supply and call us before anything is opened. A dismantled airend cannot be assessed after the fact, and a claim on one is a case nobody can win. Leave it assembled and photograph what you found.
