Chicago Pneumatic 5 HP Two-Stage Air Compressor — 60 Gallon Vertical, 230 Volt Read this first: two labelling errors in our own listing We would rather correct our record in public than sell you a machine on a specification we cannot stand behind. Two things on this page do not agree with themselves, and both are the kind that cost money if you find out afterwards. The model number. Our product title calls this the RCP-4961VNS. The manufacturer's description and our own spec record both call it the RCP-4916VNS. Those differ by a transposed pair of digits, which is exactly what a data-entry slip looks like — but we cannot tell you from here which one is correct. The phase. The description says single phase, on 230 volts. A separate spec field on this same listing says three phase. Those are not variants of one another; they are different machines needing different supplies, and getting it wrong means an electrician's visit and a wrong compressor sitting on your floor. Confirm both with us in writing before you order. We will get the model number and the phase from Chicago Pneumatic and put them in an email you can hold us to. Everything below is described from the manufacturer's own copy for this unit. The thing this compressor tells you that most do not Almost no compressor listing publishes its cut-in and cut-out pressures. This one does: the automatic start-stop pressure switch is set to engage at 135 PSI and disengage at 165 PSI. That thirty-pound band is the machine's whole working rhythm, and it is genuinely useful to know before you buy. It tells you the pressure your tools will actually see — not the number on the gauge at its peak, but the range the tank lives in between cycles. It tells you what to set your regulator below if you want stable delivery rather than a pressure that sags as the tank draws down. And a wide band on a 60 gallon receiver means fewer motor starts per hour, which is the wear that quietly kills compressors used for intermittent work: every start is an inrush current and a cold oil film. If you have ever been given a compressor whose switch band was a mystery until you put a gauge on it, you will know why this is worth the paragraph. Splash lubrication, a sight glass, and oil in the crate The pump is cast iron — cast-iron cylinders in a cast-iron crankcase — and it is splash lubricated with an oil sight glass, and it comes pre-filled with oil. Each of those three is a small thing that adds up to a machine you can actually maintain. Splash lubrication has no oil pump to fail, which is why it is still the right answer at this size. The sight glass means checking the level is a two-second glance rather than a spanner and a dipstick, so it actually gets done — the low-oil failures we see are nearly always on machines where checking was inconvenient. And arriving with oil in it means the compressor cannot be ruined on its first afternoon by somebody who assumed it was filled at the factory, which is a more common story than it should be. The safety kit around it: a fully enclosed belt guard with a high-flow design for cooling, a manual tank drain valve, and a mounted pressure gauge with a safety relief valve. Will it fit, and what to hand your electrician The 60 gallon vertical tank is the compact choice in this family — a smaller footprint and less height than the larger-tank machines in the same family, which is the point if it has to live under a mezzanine or in a corner of a two-car garage. Our record gives an overall length of 23" and a weight of 261 lbs. It still wants level, solid concrete and clear air around the belt guard. Power is a 5 HP motor on 230 volts. Note the phase question above before anyone quotes you for the circuit — that conversation is much cheaper before the machine ships. No magnetic starter is recorded as fitted on this model, so ask your electrician about motor overload protection at the same time. The tank outlet is 1/2". Yours to arrange: the pad, the supply and disconnect, motor protection, and getting the machine off the truck. What it delivers Two-stage, 16.1 CFM at 100 PSI, with a maximum working pressure of 165 PSI into the 60 gallon receiver. (A separate spec field rounds the delivered-air figure to 16 CFM; the underlying specification block is the more precise of the two and is what we have used.) Delivery at maximum pressure is lower again, as it is on every compressor — ask us for that figure in writing if it is the one that decides your purchase. Perfect for The compact professional shop that needs two-stage pressure but does not have the floor or the ceiling for a larger-tank machine. Small manufacturing and light industrial benches running sprayers, inflators and pneumatic tools intermittently through the day. The serious home workshop where a smaller vertical tank is the difference between a compressor that fits and one that does not. Anyone who wants to know the switch band before they buy rather than after. What is in the crate This listing itemises its inclusions unusually clearly, so we can be specific: an initial fill of compressor oil, a manual drain valve, an oil sight glass, a precision bearing, a pressure gauge and a pressure safety valve. The tank and safety valves are described as certified. The motor is behind a fully enclosed high flow belt guard, and control is a start-stop pressure switch. It is made in the USA. Specifications Motor 5 HP Pump Two-stage, cast iron, splash lubricated Delivered air 16.1 CFM at 100 PSI Maximum working pressure 165 PSI Pressure switch Engages 135 PSI, disengages 165 PSI Tank 60 gallon, vertical Power 230 Volt — phase to be confirmed, see above Tank outlet 1/2" Overall length 23" Weight 261 lbs Warranty 2 year Overall width and height are held in our data as bare numbers with no unit recorded against them, so they are not printed here. The model number row is deliberately absent too — see the note at the top of this page. Certification, stated honestly The manufacturer describes the tank and safety valves on this machine as certified pressure equipment, which is the certification that matters to an inspector looking at a vessel holding 165 PSI in the corner of your workshop. No third-party electrical or product-safety listing is recorded for this model in our data, and we are not going to name one that the product's documentation does not claim. If a specific listing is required by your insurer, your local code or a fleet policy, tell us which one when you ask about the model number and the phase, and we will get all three confirmed in the same email. Shipping and delivery Freight, to the lower 48 states, crated on a pallet. At 261 lbs it is the most manageable compressor in this family, but it still comes off a truck rather than out of a van — have a forklift, a dock, or enough hands and a proper ramp, or choose terminal pickup and collect it. A residential delivery address carries a residential fee. Inspect the crate with the driver present and write any damage on the bill of lading before you sign it. Photograph the pallet before it is broken down. A clean signature is very hard to walk back. Warranty Our specification record for this machine states a 2 year warranty, and Chicago Pneumatic publishes the detailed terms for its compressor range, which this listing links to rather than paraphrases. If a failure happens, leave the machine assembled. Pumps, motors and pressure switches almost always have to be inspected in the condition they failed in, and taking one apart before the claim is opened is the most reliable way to have it declined. Photograph it, stop using it, and call us — and given the labelling questions above, quote us the serial number from the tank rather than the model number from this page.
