Restore Air Pump Output The Atlantic Water Gardens replacement diaphragm for the Typhoon 400 and Typhoon 800 air pumps is the primary wear part in these diaphragm-type pond aerators. Air pump diaphragms fatigue over 12–24 months of continuous operation. A fresh diaphragm restores the pump's full LPM output and eliminates the pulsing or rattling that indicates diaphragm wear. Diaphragm Failure Is Gradual, Then Sudden Diaphragm air pumps work by flexing a rubber or elastomer membrane thousands of times per minute. As the material fatigues, output drops slowly — often imperceptibly — until the membrane cracks and output stops entirely. Replacing the diaphragm at the first sign of reduced output or increased noise is far better than waiting for complete failure, especially heading into winter when the pump must maintain an open hole in pond ice. Keep a spare diaphragm in stock as seasonal pond insurance. Compatible Pumps Typhoon 400 (30 LPM) and Typhoon 800 (60 LPM) air pumps Component Replacement diaphragm membrane Material Elastomer — UV and ozone resistant Replacement Interval Every 12–24 months under continuous operation Tools Required Small screwdriver How to Replace Disconnect the air pump from power and airline tubing. Remove the pump cover with a screwdriver to access the diaphragm chamber. Unscrew the diaphragm retainer, remove the worn membrane, and install the new one. Reassemble the cover and reconnect tubing. Test output before returning to service. Replace annually at spring pond startup as preventive maintenance. Ideal for pond owners running Typhoon air pumps year-round in Canadian outdoor conditions.
