Maximise Biological Filtration Surface Area in Any Pond Filter Aquascape BioBalls Biological Filter Media (1,000 count, model 56014) is a contractor-pack quantity of 3.8 cm (1.5 in) diameter plastic bioball filtration media providing 122 cm² (19 sq in) of surface area per ball for beneficial bacteria colonisation. Installed in any pond filter chamber or biological waterfall filter, 1,000 BioBalls provide approximately 1.33 cubic feet (37.7 L) of media volume and a total colonisable surface area that far exceeds conventional sponge or brush media at the same volume. High Surface Area, Long-Lasting Biological Media Beneficial nitrifying bacteria require stable, oxygen-rich surfaces to colonise and establish populations capable of processing ammonia and nitrite from fish waste. BioBalls meet both requirements: the open paddle-wheel structure allows continuous water and oxygen flow through the ball matrix, while the durable polypropylene material does not degrade or compact like foam media. Unlike biological sponge media that requires periodic replacement, BioBalls remain effective indefinitely and can be cleaned and returned to service without losing their structural properties. Specification Value Count 1,000 BioBalls Diameter per Ball 3.8 cm (1.5 in) Surface Area per Ball 122 cm² (19 sq in) Media Volume approximately 37.7 L (10 gal) Material UV-stable polypropylene Compatible With Any pond biological filter chamber How to Use Fill the biological filter chamber or media basket with BioBalls to the specified level. For typical pond systems, a media volume of approximately 10 litres (2.6 gal) of BioBalls per 4,000 litres (1,000 gal) of pond water is a practical starting point. The centre channel in each ball allows BioBalls to be strung onto a dowel or cord for easy removal and rinsing during filter cleaning. Rinse in pond water, not tap water, to preserve the beneficial bacteria colony when cleaning. BioBalls do not need replacement under normal use. Ideal for biological waterfall filters, skimmer-integrated filter chambers, and any pond filter installation requiring durable, high-surface-area biological media that outlasts foam or brush alternatives.
